"This is the Belle Reve Non-Human Interment Division. For over fifty years, only those at the uppermost levels of security clearance are aware of its existance."
Amanda Waller to Rick Flag, Sr.[src]

Belle Reve Correctional Center is a maximum-security prison built for incarcerating powerful superhuman, high-skilled or metahuman criminals and a black site operation for A.R.G.U.S., located in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. It houses the inmates selected to participate in Task Force M.

History[]

Non-Human Interment Division[]

In the 1970s, the Non-Human Interment Division was founded to house the non-human prisoners of the prison, whose existence was known only to high-ranking members of the government.[1] Among the prisoners who were eventually incarcerated were the Bride of Frankenstein, a temperamental zombie created by Victor Frankenstein;[2] Alex Sartorius, a radioactive criminal;[3] Weasel, an anthropomorphic weasel who was wrongfully imprisoned for the alleged murder of eight children.[4]

G.I. Robot, a World War II robot soldier who was imprisoned after massacring neo-Nazis;[5] and Nina Mazursky, an amphibious metahuman who was wrongfully imprisoned based on her appearance.[6] Other incarcerated metahumans included Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man, Shaggy Man, Fisherman, Crimson Centipede,[5] Congorilla, Nosferata, Khalis, Orca, Chemo, Egg Fu, Hyena and Bug-Eyed Bandit.[4]

Project Starfish[]

A.R.G.U.S. Director Amanda Waller eventually founded Task Force X, a special operations team made up of prisoners she recruited on Belle Reve. In 2022, Waller recruited a lineup in an operation called Project Starfish on Corto Maltese under the leadership of Colonel Rick Flag, Jr., which included Weasel,[1] the violent vigilante Peacemaker, and the assassin Bloodsport.[7] During the mission, Weasel survived falling from the Sheba, but was recaptured by A.R.G.U.S. and returned to Belle Reve. The squad's operations were later publicly exposed by Leota Adebayo, leading the United States Congress to ban A.R.G.U.S. from using humans prisoners as special agents.[1]

Task Force M Recruitment[]

Following Circe's infiltration in PokolistanA.R.G.U.S. director Amanda Waller, along with Rick Flag, Sr., visited Belle Reve to form a new Task Force lineup, with the purpose of protecting Princess Ilana Rostovic. The new group, called Task Force M, was composed of several non-human inmates with enhanced abilities. They included the zombie known as "The Bride", the amphibious woman Nina Mazursky, the radioactive metahuman Doctor Phosphorus, the military android G.I. Robot, and the monstrous animal Weasel.[1]

Following Task Force M's role in protecting the princess and capturing Circe, the team returned to Belle Reve with Circe who was interrogated by Amanda Waller about her plot to kill Rostovic. Circe used her clairvoyant abilities to show Waller an apocalyptic future of Rostovic conquering the Earth and slaughtering several heroes. Waller ordered the Commandos to return to Pokolistan to assassinate Rostovic.[4]

Following Task Force M's role in preventing the disaster in Pokolistan, Amanda Waller authorized the formation of a new lineup of Creature Commandos, restructuring the non-human division, much to the team's gratitude. The Bride of Frankenstein became the official leader, with the new lineup consisting of Doctor Phosphorus, Nosferata, Khalis, Weasel, G.I. Robot, and King Shark.[6]

Metahuman Escapes[]

"There has to be a solution. This is the third Metahuman escape from Belle Reve or Arkham in the past two months."
Cleavis Thornwaite[src]

In 2025, Belle Reve and Arkham Asylum faced issues with security, leading to several escapes that caused people such as Cleavis Thornwaite to criticize Belle Reve and the United States' handling of metahumans in general.[8]

Lex Luthor’s Incarceration[]

"Get his bald ass to Belle Reve!"
United States Armed Forces Soldier to Lex Luthor[src]

After the Daily Planet exposed Lex Luthor's relationship with President Vasil Ghurkos of Boravia to cause a war against Jarhanpur and ruin Superman's heroic reputation, several United States Armed Forces soldiers arrested Luthor for his crimes and transported him to be imprisoned at Belle Reve.[9] During his incarceration, Luthor began using a cane to walk from the injuries he received from Krypto and would spend his nights overhearing a scaly-looking metahuman and another with cartoon-like eyes having sex near his cell.

In June 2025, Luthor was visited by Rick Flag, Sr. who wanted Luthor's help stopping Peacemaker, who was using a Quantum Unfolding Chamber to travel between dimensions, similar to the dimensional portal Luthor used in Metropolis. Flag offered to have him transferred to another prison in exchange for his help. However, Luthor requested his freedom if he were to provide A.R.G.U.S. with a scanner that could locate the portal. Flag refused to set Lex free and instead offered him a chance at redemption. Luthor accepted Flag's offer, provided that he became partners with A.R.G.U.S. and would be transferred to Van Kull Maximum Security Prison.[10]

Peacemaker Kidnapped[]

"I mean, Peacemaker went to prison for four years and I had to keep up the fight by myself."

In an alternate reality, Christopher Smith became an extremist vigilante known as the "Peacemaker", killing all those who represented a threat to peace, leading to his imprisonment in Belle Reve due to his morally unethical and violent actions, serving four years in prison while his partner Adrian Chase continued his fight on his own until he was released.[11]
