"I wonder what he's dreaming about."
"Probably just chasing squirrels."
Nina Mazursky and Bride of Frankenstein

Chasing Squirrels is the fourth episode of the first season of Creature Commandos. The episode was written by James Gunn, and it released on Max on December 19, 2024.

Synopsis[]

The Creature Commandos return home to understand Circe's motivation, while Weasel reflects on the events that landed him in Belle Reve.

Plot[]

Flag and Bates arguing

Elizabeth Bates argues with Rick Flag, Sr. over Weasel's innocence

After Circe's defeat, Rick Flag, Sr. and Task Force M return to the U.S. with the witch as their prisoner. Before departing, the general shares one last intimate moment with Ilana Rostovic. At Belle Reve, John Economos is approached by Elizabeth Bates, Weasel's lawyer, demanding answers about her client’s whereabouts. She soon witnesses the team's return aboard the Osprey. Convinced of Weasel's innocence, Bates confronts Flag, who reluctantly grants her a brief conversation with her client. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the team, Eric Frankenstein has been observing them from a helicopter. Misinterpreting the friendship between Flag and the Bride as romantic, he becomes enraged and crashes the engine.

Weasel discovered by kids

Weasel befriends a group of little kids

In the interrogation room, Bates shows Weasel photographs of the deceased Sunnyhill School children, urging him to confess the truth. Upon looking at one specific picture, Weasel reminisces. In a flashback, Weasel befriends the children after they won his trust with food and spends the evening playing with them. However, a local hermit misinterprets the scene, believing Weasel is attacking the kids, and alerts the authorities.

Heroes crucified

Ilana Rostovic after having killed all the heroes on a dystopian future

In the present, Amanda Waller, John Economos, and Rick Flag Sr. interrogate Circe. Using her clairvoyant abilities, the witch explains her attempt to kill the princess was meant to "save the world." Initially skeptical, Waller is shown a disturbing vision of a dystopian future where Princess Rostovic and Gorilla Grodd, commanding an army of Amethyst Knights, conquer the world, slaughtering and impaling countless heroes. Horrified, Waller orders that the Commandos to return to Pokolistan and assassinate the princess. Flag, unwilling to harm her due to their bond, refuses the mission and leaves Belle Reve in defiance, much to Waller's frustration.

Eric Frankenstein and Rick Flag Sr drinking

Eric Frankenstein and Flag, Sr. drink tea

At Belle Reve's cafeteria, after defending Nina Mazursky from fellow inmate Congorilla, the Bride is appointed the new field leader. She, along with Nina, Weasel, and Dr. Phosphorus, is tasked with returning to Pokolistan. Meanwhile, Flag attempts to warn the Pokolistani authorities about the princess's planned assassination but is ignored due to the language barrier. Upon returning home, he is ambushed by Frankenstein, who accuses him of stealing "his" Bride. After a brief fight, the misunderstanding is resolved over tea, where Flag offers a partnership. He promises to reunite Eric with the Bride if the creature helps him thwart Ilana's murder first.

Weasel in the middle of the fire

Weasel tries to save a little girl from the Destruction of Sunnyhill School

During the flight back to Pokolistan, Weasel experiences troubling dreams of his past. Another flashback reveals he and the children venturing into the school's basement. While playing with matches and alcohol, the kids accidentally start a fire. The local hermit, armed with a shotgun, tries to kill Weasel but inadvertently shoots the boiler, resulting in an explosion killing him and most of the children. Though Weasel tries to save one child, he is ultimately wounded and arrested by the police, leaving him deeply distressed. In the present, Weasel’s restless sleep catches the attention of his teammates. The Bride casually remarks that he must be dreaming of "chasing squirrels", dismissing his agitation.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • According to James Gunn, the fourth episode of Creature Commandos is the saddest thing he's ever written and the one he wanted the most to get right: “I remember writing one of the episodes. I don’t know if I should say which one..…episode four. I won’t say who it’s about. I was in Colorado with my wife Jen [Holland], and I walked into the kitchen, and I was like, ‘I think this is the saddest thing I’ve ever written in my entire life. It is really heartbreaking.’ I could feel it in my bones how sad it was. It also happened to be the episode that I was the most insane about getting right,”[1]
  • According to artist Dusty Abell, Alec Holland/Swamp Thing was in early concepts of Circe's vision.[2]
