"Please! Whatever you want, I'll give it to you."
"Good. What I want... is you dead."
Ilana Rostovic and Circe[src]

Circe is an Amazonian sorceress who seeks to become ruler of her homeland, the hidden island nation of Themyscira, recruiting the Sons of Themyscira and promising them access to her homeland in exchange for their cooperation. During her quest for power in Pokolistan and her attempts to assassinate Princess Ilana Rostovic, she became a formidable enemy of Task Force M, determined to eliminate them before they could thwart her plans of conquest, but was unsuccessful in killing Rostovic. She was promptly defeated, captured by Task Force M and taken to Belle Reve Correctional Center to be interrogated by A.R.G.U.S. about her schemes.

Once in Belle Reve, Circe used her powers as a clairvoyant to show Amanda Waller a premonition of a future where Rostovic destroys the world, which originally inspired the sorceress to begin her attempts to kill her in order to prevent that outcome. Concerned for the fate of the world, Waller ordered Task Force M to be reassembled to return to Pokolistan and finish Circe's goal of killing Rostovic.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Saving Themyscira[]

"She warned of a tsunami that was going to kill thousands. Many, but not all of the islanders took refuge inland. A major tsunami did indeed hit within an hour of what Circe predicted. Those who took refuge survived. Those who did not, did not."
Aisla MacPherson[src]

In 2013, Circe warned the residents of Themyscira of an upcoming tsunami, saving the lives of the Amazons who listened and sought shelter inland, while those who did not perished during the disaster.[2]

Recruiting the Sons of Themyscira[]

"Circe claims to be the rightful heir to the throne of the perhaps mythical, perhaps real, all-female island nation of Themyscira. Inside sources claim Circe has promised the Sons that once the downfall of Pokolistan is achieved, she will lead them to conquer Themyscira."
―Reporter[src]

Circe recruited the Sons of Themyscira to work for her in her attempt at deposing the royal family of Pokolistan, promising them that once Pokolistan fell she would take the Sons to Themyscira. They agreed and rallied behind her, learning about the island nation from her and meeting up in real life for their plan.[1]

―Reporter[src]

Circe led the Sons of Themyscira into Pokolistan, where they came across a gas station. Circe attacked the gas station with powerful blasts of magic while the Sons of Themyscira used weapons. She was photographed leading the Sons forward as they brandished their weapons in celebration.[1]

Attack on Frankenstein Manor[]

"You've been sent by the US government? Well, I have a message for your leaders."
―Circe to Bride of Frankenstein[src]

While out in Pokolistan, Tanner reported back that he saw the arrival of Task Force M, a new security detail for Princess Ilana Rostovic. [1] Circe had Tanner follow the Commandos, and he reported back to another of the Sons of Themyscira that two of them had left the Poko Castle. The Son, who went by CRITICALSCEPTICFACTSOVERFEELINGS_91, went to tell Circe, who interrupted and said that she heard Tanner and requested the address for where they were. She continued eating her steak and used her telekinesis to drink beer, impressing the Sons.

Circe mobilized the sons and led them to Frankenstein Manor, where she levitated herself to a window and sent a powerful blast through it, which the two task force members, Bride of Frankenstein and Nina Mazursky, managed to avoid. She attempted to fire several more blasts, but Bride delayed her by throwing a piece of furniture which Circe avoided. The Sons broke into the room as Circe attempted to fire another blast, but Bride broke the floor under her and Mazursky, allowing them to fall to the next floor. Circe flew to the top of the roof but saw CRITICALSCEPTICFACTSOVERFEELINGS_91 flying past her as he had gotten thrown through it.

Circe about to shoot

Circe blasted through the ceiling and several windows, but Bride was fast enough to avoid the blasts while carrying Mazursky. Bride jumped out a window and stole a gun from one of the Sons, killing the ones surrounding her. Circe approached the Bride, who began firing at her. However, Circe used her magic to turn the bullets into butterflies. While Mazursky fled, Circe turned the butterflies into a powerful blast of magic which she returned to the Bride. The bride then threw a car at Circe, who easily cut it in half, only to find Bride right behind the car. Bride pushed Circe back into the house, punching her through several walls until they ended up flying out of the roof.

Their fight took them into the laboratory of the manor, where Bride managed to pin her to the wall. Bride attempted to punch Circe's face, but Circe teleported away. She reappeared behind the Bride and punched her, holding her on the operating table and punching her face into it repeatedly. The Bride ended up on her hands and knees, spitting out blood. Circe stood over the Bride and asked if she was sent by the United States government, hitting her with a metal rod. She prepared to magically blast Bride's face, saying that it would be a message to the government. However, Bride stabbed a piece of glass through Circe's ankle, causing her to misfire. Bride then got up and kicked Crice's groin area, shattering the gem on her waist.

Circe and Bride on the roof

Circe and the Bride continue their fight on the balcony.

The Bride pushed Circe out onto the balcony, where they continued their fight. Bride ended up on top of Circe, punching her repeatedly. However, before she could get a final blow, Circe caught Bride's arms and transformed them into balloon men, shocking the Bride. Bride tried uselessly to attack Circe with her balloon arms, allowing Circe to repeatedly punch her. As Bride was bleeding, Circe pushed her off the balcony, allowing the Sons to take them both captive. [3]

Battle at Poko Castle[]

"You don't understand what you've done! YOU'VE DOOMED THE WORLD!"
―Circe to the Creature Commandos[src]

With Mazursky and Bride defeated and Task Force M coming to the rescue, Circe planned a distraction so she could ambush Rostovic, ordering her forces to take them hostage, tying Bride to a chair in the entryway, placing tape over her mouth, and imprisoning Nina Mazursky in the mansion's bathtub, before fleeing to Poko Castle, where the Sons of Themyscira engaged in battle against the Amethyst Knights, who were soon joined by Task Force M as reinforcements after discovering the distraction. When G.I. Robot began slaughtering her forces, Circe was forced to intervene, blasting the robot from behind, which made the team worried when they saw Circe conjure an explosion at them which they managed to dodge.

Circe then flew towards the window of the princess's room, catching her by surprise when she shot at one of her thugs, quickly setting off an explosion to knock her down, and when Ilana Rostovic tried to get up, Circe used her powers to levitate her and slam her into the wardrobe. A weakened Rostovic begged Circe for mercy, promising to give her anything she wanted, but Circe just wanted to kill her, preparing to cast a spell on her.

However, Weasel entered the room and pushed Circe out the window, biting her savagely, Circe tried to break free by punching him but as she tried to get up, Weasel stopped her and began slashing her from behind. Doctor Phosphorus then approached her claiming her to "love a good barbecue", before putting his radioactive hand on her face, burning her as she screamed in agony. A defeated Circe became angry at them, warning them that they doomed the world.[4]

Interrogated by Amanda Waller[]

Circe is interrogated by Amanda Waller

"You've found yourself in the middle of an international incident, Red. So you help me, I help you. What were you doing in Pokolistan?"
"Trying to save your worthless lives."
"Save our lives, exactly how?"
"From that Princess bitch, Rostovic. I was trying to kill her to save the world."
Amanda Waller and Circe[src]

Circe was taken prisoner and transferred to Belle Reve to be interrogated by A.R.G.U.S., her hands cuffed so she could not cast spells. Upon arriving, Amanda Waller ordered her to be locked in the interrogation room to speak with her. The guards soon took Circe and forced her to sit in a chair against her will, while Circe threatened to kill them, before Waller introduced herself to her through a microphone. An upset Circe asked about her charges, but Waller was sarcastic as she told her that she was being prosecuted for first and second degree sorcery, mentioning witches from popular culture. Circe threatened to kill her, but she told her that she understood that she could not cast spells, mocking her costume and questioning why supervillains were always so sexy.

Circe shows a premonition

Circe claims to be clairvoyant

Waller explained to Circe that she found herself in the middle of an international incident and asked her what she was doing in Pokolistan, to which Circe excused herself by claiming she was trying to prevent a catastrophe, prompting Flag to mock her and Waller to only see charges of murder and assault in her files, asking why they should believe her. Circe then told Waller how she could show her the future, rising from her chair to invite her to see it to prove Ilana Rostovic was a threat to the world, claims which were backed up by John Economos, who read the files which claimed she was possibly clairvoyant and that, although she was bound, she could get inside her head.

Waller then entered the chamber with Circe, with Flag and Economos watching the encounter closely. Circe used her powers to get inside Waller's head, showing her a dark future where Rostovic and her guards conquered Earth, turning it into an apocalyptic wasteland, and showing her numerous superheroes slaughtered, leaving Waller traumatized and Circe in tears. Waller quickly called in Dr. Aisla MacPherson, who after analyzing Circe claimed that she was legitimately clairvoyant, stating that Circe had predicted a tsunami that ended up happening and how she became less altruistic. Concerned for the fate of the world, Waller ordered Task Force M to be reassembled to return to Pokolistan and kill Rostovic, putting the Bride of Frankenstein as the new leader after Rick Flag, Sr. resigned.[2]

Personality[]

"Even the devil doesn't want to see the world dying."
―Circe[src]

An evil sorceress from Themyscira, Circe is a woman with apathetic behavior. She is cruel, ruthless, manipulative, and quite hungry for power; as she is known for her desire to become ruler of her homeland and doing misdeeds that are considered "less than altruistic", murder and assault charges among most of them. In her attempts to kill Ilana Rostovic, Circe recruited the Sons of Themyscira as her personal army and manipulated them into serving her and doing her bidding, not caring much for their deaths and even being visibly disgusted by their presence.

As an Amazon, she is aware of her attractiveness but seems to be more indifferent than anything towards people admiring her attributes, as she seems not to care at all about manners when she is shown burping after drinking beer while the Sons of Themyscira are amazed by her mere appareance. During the Invasion of Pokolistan, Circe clearly enjoyed fighting the Bride of Frankenstein and showed her sadistic nature while mocking and hurting her at the same time, even blowing a kiss towards her before attempting to kill her with one of her powerful blasts of magical energy. When she is left alone with Rostovic, she takes her time and ruthlessly plays with her, letting her beg for mercy before actually trying to kill her.

Despite having the résumé of a supervillain with no redeeming qualities, Circe seems to quite genuinely worry about life to a certain extent, as she warned the Amazons of a tsunami that she herself predicted instead of letting them die. As a clairvoyant, Circe is able to see potential futures and prevent the worst of outcomes by doing what may need to be done in the present. Influenced by the vision of Rostovic destroying the world, Circe did everything in her power to assassinate the Princess, as in her own words "even the devil doesn't want to see the world dying". After failing in her mission and being incarcerated, she is shown with tears in her eyes after showing Amanda Waller the same vision that prompted her to try to kill the Princess. In the end, Circe's obviously evil nature and crimes end up backfiring significantly on her selfless goal, as they made Rick Flag, Sr. dubious of her genuine intentions and instead lead him to believe in the lies of Rostovic, who faked her innocence.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Amazon Physiology: Circe is an Amazon from Themyscira and thus has many superhuman attributes.
    • Superhuman Strength: As an Amazon, Circe is much stronger than a typical human, contending with the Bride's own strength but wasn't able to decisively overpower her, relying on her magical abilities to overcome the Bride.
    • Superhuman Durability: Circe is surprisingly durable, taking brutal attacks from the Bride in the midst of fighting her but was bloodied as a result, but her durability has its upper limits and she wasn't invincible, as she was grievously injured by savage attacks from Weasel and Doctor Phosphorus which left her wounded and badly burnt.
    • Longevity: Circe is capable of living for centuries without physically aging, being effectively immortal.
  • Magic: Circe is a powerful and experienced sorceress, being capable to manipulate vast amounts of magical energies for a variety of effects.
    • Energy Projection:

      Circe using her powers

Circe can fire bolts, waves, and blasts of magical pink energy out of her hands. These blasts are capable of causing large explosions and significant physical damage. She used them to attack a gas station in Pokolistan and in her brutal attempts to kill the Bride of Frankenstein and Nina Mazursky.
    • Flight: Circe is able to walk on air, levitate, and fly. She flew over a gas station while attacking it, and flew around Frankenstein Manor to attack from various angles.

    • Teleportation: Circe can move from one place to another at will, disappearing into what looks like a purple smoke formation. She used this ability to escape getting punched by the Bride.
    • Transmutation: Circe has the ability to transform objects around her. She turned bullets into butterflies while being fired at by the Bride, then transforming those butterflies into magical energy to attack the Bride with. She was even able to transform organic matter into inorganic matter, such as when she turned the Bride's arms into balloons.
    • Clairvoyance: Circe is able to foresee the potential outcomes in the future. She uses this power to predict disasters and warns those who would listen. In 2012, she correctly predicted the arrival of a tsunami on Themyscira, saving the lives of the Amazons who believed her. In 2023, she appeared to have foreseen a potential dystopian future involving Ilana Rostovic's take over on the world.
    • Vision Projection: Circe is capable of casting vivid mental images directly into people's minds, by eye contact.

Abilities[]

  • Skilled Combatant: Circe is skilled in hand-to-hand combat, which she was able to combine with her strong magic to fight the Bride of Frankenstein, although she desperately resorted to casting spells to defeat the Bride, with the latter dominating her in close quarters combat. After destroying G.I. Robot, she was ambushed by Doctor Phosphorus and Weasel and savagely assaulted, unable to defend herself from their ferocious attacks.
