"That's a shapeshifter. Calls himself Clayface."
Rick Flag, Sr.[src]

Clayface is a shapeshifting metahuman monster who was hired by the princess of Pokolistan, Ilana Rostovic, into murdering and impersonating college professor Aisla MacPherson to discredit Circe's prediction of Rostovic's true nature. He later came into conflict with Rick Flag, Sr. and Eric Frankenstein when the unlikely pair discovered his "deception", coming narrowly close to killing them both before being electrocuted unconscious by Frankenstein.

Biography[]

Hired by Ilana Rostovic[]

Following Circe's capture by the Creature Commandos, Ilana Rostovic proposed executing the witch, while Rick Flag, Sr. argued for sending her to the U.S. for interrogation. Concerned that Circe might expose her scheme, Ilana dispatched one of her knights to spy on the team. The knight witnessed the arrival of Professor Aisla MacPherson, who appeared to confirm Circe’s clairvoyant powers.

To discredit Circe and prevent any assassination attempt against her, Ilana hired Clayface to murder and to impersonate MacPherson. Anticipating that Flag might suspect the MacPherson he encountered at Belle Reve was a decoy, Ilana aimed to manipulate him into believing Clayface was leading them astray, further obscuring her involvement in the plot.[4]

Impersonating Aisla MacPherson[]

Following the professor's visit at Belle Reve, Clayface killed Aisla MacPherson at her home and adopted her identity. He left her corpse to rot in her room upstairs and occupied her house as his own, even continuing to feed her cat after her demise.[1]

Infiltration into Aisla MacPherson's House[]

"Oh, I'm sorry. Because, what about... the lesbians?"
―Clayface[src]

Still disguised as Aisla MacPherson, Clayface resumed teaching at Terrebone University, adopting a vulgar and crude demeanor that shocked the students; and caught the attention of Rick Flag, Sr. and Eric Frankenstein, who were secretly spying on him through a window.

Later that day, as Flag and Frankenstein investigated the real professor's home, they discovered her lifeless body. Unaware of their presence, Clayface returned to the house and feed MacPherson's cat. Once in private, he shed his disguise, reverting to his monstrous form, and began playing video games. As the two intruders attempted to leave unnoticed, Clayface had grabbed themwith his outstretched limbs, boasting that he had found them, and consequently launched a savage attack.

In the ensuing fight, Clayface inflicted severe injuries on Flag by grabbing him and throwing him to a wall, where he proceeded to smash his body repeteadly with his hand transformed into a clay hammer. When Frankenstein broke free from the limbs holding him, he rammed into Clayface only to be trapped again inside him. A desperate Flag tried to defend himself by shooting Clayface, but he quickly learned to his dismain that the monster is unable to sustain damage and simply regenerated the missing clay from the gunshots.

Resuming his torture, Clayface continued to punch Flag, finishing him by grabbing him and breaking his back over his knee, which knocked him out. Clayface then proceeded to attempt to suffocate Frankenstein by engulfing him in his clay-like body, laughing sadistically in reaction to his futile efforts to escape. In a desperate move, Frankenstein ripped a power socket from the wall and used it to electrify both himself and Clayface, bringing the violent confrontation to an abrupt end.[1]

Clayface's unconscious remains were left in the scene and were found by Amanda Waller and John Economos some time later. After finding MacPherson's corpse and knowing the nature of Clayface's powers as a shapeshifter, the two became suspicious of the information given to them by the real MacPherson and instantly ordered the Creature Commandos to stop their mission; all according to Rostovic's plan to fake her innocence.[4]

Personality[]

"He's dangerous."
Rick Flag, Sr.[src]

Clayface can be characterized as manipulative and violent. His arrogance leads him to take his abilities for granted, often displaying unprofessional and erratic behavior. As a master of deceit, while disguised as Aisla MacPherson, he behaved so inappropriately during lectures that it reinforced Rick Flag, Sr.'s suspicion of an impostor, achieving his mission of confirming his suspicions of MacPherson's claims in order for A.R.G.U.S. to further distrust Circe. Despite his monstrous appareance and vulgar behaviour, Clayface has demonstrated cunning and intelligence, skillfully using his shapeshifting powers to manipulate others.

Clayface also exhibits a sadistic streak, taking pleasure in inflicting pain on his enemies. During the fight at MacPherson's house, he brutally beat Rick Flag, Sr. to the brink of death, prolonging the suffering despite being capable of killing him quickly. He also attempted to smother Eric Frankenstein with his clay-like body, clearly reveling in the torment rather than delivering a swift end. For all the sadistic pleasure he takes from hurting, he continued to feed MacPherson's cat even after her death, which could be interpreted as a personal dislike for killing animals.

In addition to his ability to mimic others’ appearances, behaviors, and traits, Clayface’s true persona is crass, libertine and unrefined. When alone, he shamelessly burps and drinks without restraint. His conduct while "teaching" further illustrates his lack of boundaries and decency, as he made inappropriate comments to a female student and even touched her inappropriately, reducing the study of Themyscira and the Amazons to a crude remark about "lesbians", also proving that he is a sexual obsessive.[1]
