- "Who wants to shake hands with a skeleton?"
- ―Alex Sartorius to Rupert Thorne[src]
Doctor Alexander James "Alex" Sartorius, codenamed Doctor Phosphorus, is a former nuclear scientist from Gotham City who was betrayed by crime lord Rupert Thorne after a deal went awry and was tossed into his radiation treatment machine to be killed. The machine did not kill Alex but instead turned him into a radioactive mutant with potent powers. The incident drove Alex mad, he became a sadistic sociopath who went on a killing spree against Thorne's criminal gang which he took over, his fledging criminal empire was cut short as he was apprehended by Batman.
Eventually Phosphorous was recruited to the Creature Commandos, having to protect Princess Ilana Rostovic from the sorceress Circe in Pokolistan before turning on Rostovic on Amanda Waller's orders. Following the mission resulting in Rostovic's demise, Phosphorus joined a new Commandos lineup led by Bride.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Family Matters[]

Sartorius and Parvin get married
- "I can't continue my research without their funding. I love you. You know that?"
"That is irrelevant to what are we talking about."
"They're not good people. But a nuclear fusion treatment that destroys cancer forever without harming the patient? That's worth dealing with anyone! With a treatment like that, my father might still be alive... Your mother." - ―Parvin Sartorius and Alex Sartorius[src]
During his childhood in Gotham City, Alex Sartorius suffered the death of his father from cancer, which left him traumatized by his failure to save him. As an adult, Sartorius became a renowned nuclear scientist and opened his own scientific company, Sartorius Labs. Sartorius met and fell in love with Parvin, who had immigrated from a country with an oppressive regime and whose mother also died of cancer. Eventually, Sartorius proposed to Parvin and the two married, dancing around their guests. After purchasing a residence, Sartorius and Parvin conceived a son, whom Sartorius would often play with, throwing into the air to pretend he could fly.

Sartorius argues with Parvin about his deal with Rupert Thorne
Sartorius began working on a nuclear experiment that would destroy cancer without harming the patient, but lacking funding, he was forced to make a deal with mobster Rupert Thorne, agreeing to deliver the results of the experiment to Bialya's scientists in exchange for his money. However, Sartorius and Thorne's dealings left Parvin concerned, who confronted her husband about their deal. During their argument, Sartorius promised her that her alliance with Thorne would end well, despite the danger from Thorne's gang, assuring her that if she gets the treatment done, he can make amends for the deaths of his father and mother-in-law, but despite the proposal, Parvin questioned if there was any other way, causing Sartorius to decide to deliver false results to Bialya in an attempt to fool Thorne.[2]
Assassination of Sartorius' Family[]

Sartorius cries over the murder of Parvin and his son
- "Sorry, Sartorius, but this is the way it has to be."
- ―Rupert Thorne to Alex Sartorius[src]
However, Rupert Thorne was informed by Bialya's scientists about Sartorius' false results, so Thorne and his gang headed to Sartorius' residence, where they brutally murdered Parvin and her son as punishment. Upon returning home, Sartorius was met by Thorne and his gang, watching in horror as his family was murdered, causing him to break down in tears as Thorne taunted him. Sartorius remained horrified before two of Thorne's henchmen forced him to approach the corpses and put his hands in the blood, as well as hand him a knife to incriminate him, as he cried in pain for his family, listening to Thorne's sadistic laughter.

Sartorius is kidnapped by Thorne and his men
Shortly after, Sartorius was kidnapped by Thorne and taken to a van to be personally punished. Sartorius was still crying in the corner of the van, realizing that Thorne and his gang were distracted, which he decided to use in an attempt to escape, opening the back door of the van, although his arm was injured after his fall. Frightened, Sartorius desperately tried to flee, while two of the gang's henchmen chased him, managing to capture him again due to his slow walk, causing Sartorius to be taken to the van, begging to be released. Despite his pleas, Sartorius was brought before Thorne, who mocked his attempt, declaring that he would not escape, leaving him overwhelmed.[2]
Transformed by Rupert Thorne[]

Sartorius argues with Thorne about the false results
- "My wife... She came from a country with an oppressive regime. She is... was sensitive about giving nuclear secrets to another-"
"Oh, what a prince. Right guys? Throwing his dead wife under the bus."
"No, no... I just... I didn't think anyone would notice."
"The con man's excuse is "I didn't think no one would know I was conning them."" - ―Alex Sartorius and Rupert Thorne[src]
Taken to Sartorius Labs, he was forced to allow Rupert Thorne and his gang inside, who began investigating his lab, with Sartorius questioning the motive of their actions, realizing that Thorne discovered the false results that Bialya discovered, despite Sartorius attempting to deny his deception, much to Thorne's anger, who berated him for reneging on their agreement before they were interrupted when a henchman discovered Sartorius' true results, causing him to reveal that Parvin convinced him to send them false results due to coming from an oppressive regime, causing Thorne to mock Sartorius when he stated that he thought no one would notice the false numbers.

Sartorius is tranformed into a radioactive metahuman
Not knowing what to do with Sartorius, Thorne ordered his henchmen to place him in his nuclear chamber, carrying Sartorius against his will and locking him inside. Despite his efforts to break free, Sartorius was locked inside his own invention and begged to be released, while Thorne mockingly recounted that he would frame Sartorius for the murder of his family and commited "suicide" by atomizing himself in his own nuclear chamber, which Thorne's henchman turned on as the nuclear power ignited. Inside the chamber, Sartorius began to scream as his skin began to get radiations, becoming translucent, allowing to see his skeleton, with Thorne and his gang mocking him before Sartorius was consumed by the nuclear process, being presumed dead by the gang. However, when they retreated, Sartorius managed to survive, now transformed into a radioactive metahuman.[2]
Rising to Gotham City Crime[]
Massacre of Rupert Thorne's Gang[]

Sartorius burns down one of Thorne's affiliates' house
- "From this moment forward, everything that was Rupert Thorne's now is mine. His money, his territory, his drug business, everything. Got it?"
- ―Doctor Phosphorus[src]
A vengeful Sartorius infiltrated Rupert Thorne's mansion, first murdering his gatekeeper and then proceeding inside to greet Thorne and his family. Sartorius murdered Thorne along with his wife and kids in cold blood, which is then reported by Gotham City News the following night. From there, Sartorius tracked down Thorne's men, individually murdering one of his affiliates by choking him to death in a grocery store, another who is held by Sartorius by his feet at a rooftop, disintegrating them until he falls to his death, and a third who is tied up and gagged to a sofa while watching the news of Thorne's murder, who Sartorius proceeds to incinerate alongside burning his house down.

Phosphorus and his gang engage in a shootout
Phosphorus took over Thorne's empire, inheriting his wealth, various assets and commandeering his mob. His henchmen began wearing skull-themed facepaint to fashion themselves after Phosphorus' aesthetic, and would accompany him in such makeup during their operations, such as when they clashed with another gang on Gotham's streets and engaged in a shootout.[2]
Captured by Batman[]

Sartorius sees Batman as he arrives to capture him
- "What?"
- ―Doctor Phosphorus[src]
One night, Phosphorus and his men visited the Ice Lounge during a party, with him dancing to a crowd while reminiscing of his former life, including the night of his marriage and the days spent playing with his son. At the height of his glee, Sartorius was intercepted by Batman, who shuts down the Ice Lounge's party and captures Phosphorus into custody, eventually handing him off to the authorities as he's incarcerated at Belle Reve Correctional Center.[2] where he would stay for the next fifteen years.[2]
Invasion of Pokolistan[]
Recruited to the Creature Commandos[]

Phosphorus plays Jenga with G.I. Robot
- "Who's Jason and the Argonauts?"
"A sociopath who calls himself Doctor Phosphorus." - ―Rick Flag, Sr. and Amanda Waller[src]
One morning, while resting with his non-human fellows at Belle Reve Correctional Center, Phosphorus played Jenga with G.I. Robot. However, when he pulled out a wooden block and grabbed it with his hand, it disintegrated. G.I. Robot then detected a swastika pattern within the tower, so he started to fire at the pile of blocks, shocking Phosphorus.

Phosphorus rushes at Amanda Waller
Amanda Waller opened the entrance to introduce the prisoners to Rick Flag, Sr., so Phosphorus, the Bride, and Weasel rushed at her. However, Waller used the Nano-Bomb Remote Detonator to electrocute them and stop them, leaving him and his fellows unconscious on the ground.[5]
Arrival to Poko Castle[]

Phosphorus looks at Weasel trying to get free
- "General, I believe you've read us wrong. We're delighted to be here and delighted to serve our country."
- ―Doctor Phosphorus to Rick Flag, Sr.[src]
Upon awakening, Phosphorus and the others were forced to join a task force on a mission to Pokolistan. Upon takeoff, Rick Flag, Sr. tried to be sympathetic to the team, knowing they had no choice but to tag along, but the Phosphorus sarcastically claimed to be excited about the mission. Seeing his skull, Bride asked if Phosphorus was smiling, which Phosphorus confirmed. As Weasel began to chirp and try to break free, Phosphorus claimed to know of the accusations that he had killed children, listening to Flag talk about Weasel's previous bad experience on the Sheba.

Phosphorus complains about Weasel peeing next to him
Upon landing, the team was greeted by guard Alexi, who took them in armored tanks to the castle. Weasel then urinated next to Doctor Phosphorus, much to his disgust, who looked at Bride suggesting that they should have taken Weasel out for a walk after the long trip. Bride got upset with Phosphorus looking at her for the last comment and threatened him, scaring him.

Phosphorus and the team are on alert due to a joke by Alexi
The team arrived at Poko Castle, admiring it until they were greeted by Princess Ilana Rostovic. Flag bowed to the princess, which Alexi claimed was done improperly and threatened to kill him as retaliation. The guards pointed their weapons at the team, which prepared to defend themselves, only to learn that Alex was joking. Alexi explained his love for American humor using dated references, which Phosphorus commented on.

Phosphorus dances with the guards
Rostovic stopped Alexi, inviting the team to a feast. Sitting down at the table, Phosphorus was served a meat chop, which he touched to warm it up and took a bite, throwing the rest on the floor and doing the same with a roast chicken, the leftovers being picked up by Weasel. At dusk, the team went out into the courtyard, where Phosphorus had fun dancing with the guards.[5]
Duel for the Nano-Bomb Remote Detonator[]

Phosphorus plans the theft of the Nano-Bomb Remote Detonator
- "Phosphorus, you idiot! You think Waller would give me the only remote? You'd be hopping around like a Mexican jumping bean for days, if you escaped. Or if I told her about this... I'm not here to torture you. We're supposed to be on the same damn team."
- ―Rick Flag Sr. to Doctor Phosphorus[src]
At night, Phosphorus was taken to his room where, instead of sleeping, he took off his glove and admired the radiation on his hand, planning to steal the Nano-Bomb Remote Detonator from Rick Flag, Sr. Phosphorus broke into Flag's room and began searching through his furnishings for the detonator. Phosphorus felt uneasy as Flag stood in front of him, his face intimidating, and the detonator fell to the ground as Flag swiftly knocked Phosphorus into the wall.

Phosphorus attacks Rick Flag, Sr.
Flag and Phosphorus stared at the detonator before sprinting to seize it and tried to strike Flag with his radiation, but Flag ducked under it and pushed him to seize the detonator. As Flag kept dodging and the bed caught fire, Phophorus swiftly launched himself at Flag. Flag grabbed a pillow in an attempt to put out the fire, struck the wall, and struck Phosphorous in the face, burning his hand in the process. However, the fire spread through the room, and Phosphorus felt the wood of the floor beneath him crack. Flag and Phorsphorus then fell into the kitchen. Phosphorus regained himself and grabbed Flag's arm, and set it on fire. He attempted to seize the detonator in a cup, but Flag struck Phosphorus with a frying pan.

Phosphorus reflects about Rick Flag, Sr.'s words
Phosphorus accidentally knocked Flag into a hot pot when he stole the detonator and launched a radioactive attack at him, Flag then assaulted Phosphorus with a glove, repeatedly slamming him against the table, but Phosphorus punched him and threw boiling water in his face. Flag fought back by shoving Phosphorus into a bookcase, bringing him to the ground, and seizing the remote control. Flag stopped himself from detonating the Nano-Bombs, instead reprimanding Phosphorus, warning him of the repercussions if Amanda Waller discovered. Phosphorus reflected after Flag reminded him that they were on the same team and that Flag was not there to torment him.[5]
"Helping" Rick Flag[]

Phosphorus asks Alexi to wait
- "Have you seen General Flag?"
"Uh, yeah, why?"
"Because he should be informed that two of your teammates have left the grounds."
"Yeah, he's, uh, in there... Maybe you should just give him thirty seconds. I mean, you've seen the princess. I don't know how he could hold out for more than thirty seconds, do you? Ah, you got a point, Weez. He's an older guy, probabily has a lot of experience. Give him a full minute." - ―Alexi and Doctor Phosphorus[src]
Ilana Rostovic took Rick Flag, Sr. to the bathroom to treat his burns, where Phosphorus, G.I. Robot, and Weasel witnessed an upset Flag threatening them with the detonator before Rostovic closed the door. Flag and Rostovic began to have sex in the bathroom, which the trio heard as they saw Alexi approach them. Alexi asked for Flag, reporting that the other two Creature Commandos escaped, but Phosphorus asked him to wait for them to finish, believing himself to be helping Flag. However, Alexi insisted that it was an emergency and became annoyed with Phosphorus, believing that he was laughing. Phosphorus explained that his skull made him look like he was laughing even when he was not. Hearing Flag and Rostovic moan louder, Alexi asked to knock on the door, but Phosphorus signaled him to wait.[6]
Rescue Mission[]

Phosphorus comforts G.I. Robot
- "You should've let Alexi tell me The Bride and Nina were gone."
"Sue me for being a bro and doing you a favor."
"Some favor."
"Seems, according to you, I can't do anything right."
"Oh, I'd forego the martyr complex, considering two hours ago, you were trying to murder me." - ―Rick Flag, Sr. and Doctor Phosphorus[src]
Once Rick Flag, Sr. and Ilana Rostovic finished having sex, the team alerted Flag about Bride of Frankenstein and Nina Mazursky's escape, so the team quickly geared up and accompanied Flag on a mission to retrieve them. As they left the castle, Flag expressed anger toward Phosphorus for not allowing Alexi to inform him as soon as he found out, but Phosphorus explained that he saw it as a favor. Flag berated Phosphorus for attacking him, leading G.I. Robot to ask if Phosphorus was a Nazi. Flag said that Phosphorus was not a Nazi, disappointing him as Phosphorus comforted him. The team then boarded the armored tank with Alexi.[6]

Phosphorus ambushes the Frankenstein Manor
Upon arriving at Frankenstein Manor, the team dropped to the ground and Flag explained the rescue plan to the team. Once Flag gave them the signal, they ambushed the mansion, where Phosphorus used his powers to break through a wall, finding the Bride of Frankenstein tied to a seat with her mouth taped up, with Phosphorus suspecting it was some sort of trap. Once they removed the tape from her mouth, Bride alerted them that Circe and her forces had escaped, confusing Phosphorus and Weasel who looked at each other and heard Flag and Bride arguing. Phosphorus burned Bride's chains to free her and Flag realized it was a distraction from Circe to attack the Princess, so he ordered them to run to the tank to go back to the castle, being shocked to see G.I. Robot carry Nina Mazursky in a bathtub.[7]
Battle at Poko Castle[]

Phosphorus stopping bullets
Upon reaching the castle gate, the team brutally ran over one of the Sons of Themyscira, quickly exiting the vehicle to meet the thugs. Phosphorus walked across the battlefield until he was shot by one of the thugs, however Phosphorus used his radioactive powers to stop the bullets which disintegrated, running up to the thug to fatally pierce his liver, killing him bloodily while shouting "Shish Kebab", before incinerating him. Phosphorus continued to engage the Sons of Themyscira as they took cover in the pond with his teammates, firing radiation blasts at him, until G.I. Robot activated his weapons and began firing at his enemies.

Phosphorus before roasting Circe's face
When the robot switched his cannons to triple cannons, Flag ordered him to take cover on the ground. However, Circe blasted G.I. Robot in the back, which destroyed his body and put him out of the fight. Circe attempted to ambush the princess, but was brutally attacked by Weasel who pushed her out the window and began savagely slashing and biting her face, and Phosphorus approached a weakened Circe, claiming to love good barbecue and putting his radioactive hand on her face, burning her as she screamed in agony, before hearing Circe warn the team that they had doomed the world.[7]
Return to Belle Reve[]
Befriending the Bride[]

Phosphorus tries to befriend the Bride of Frankenstein
- "Now everyone's happy, right? Except for you. Because you no longer have food, and you're ugly. And this one because he no longer has a jaw. He also might be dead."
- ―Doctor Phosphorus to Nosferata[src]
With the mission completed, the team traveled back to Belle Reve Correctional Center taking Circe hostage, with Phosphorus and his teammates being put back into imprisonment. At lunchtime, Phosphorus followed Bride expressing his delight at returning home and seeing the hyena vomit that was served to him, upsetting Bride who did not see him as a friend, despite Phosphorus believing so. In that, they both witnessed Nina Mazursky being bullied by Congorilla who stole her food from her tray, prompting Bride to brutally murder the gorilla.

Phosphorus takes food away from Nosferata
The event left everyone perplexed and leaded Phosphorus to take Nosferata's tray away from her, seeing how everyone was now happy, except Nosferata for no longer having food, calling her ugly. Suddenly, John Economos appeared to inform Task Force M that they had a new mission to return to Pokolistan and kill Princess Ilana Rostovic, putting the Bride of Frankenstein as the new leader and asking them to prepare. Upon takeoff, Phosphorus read a radiation book.[8]
Prevention of the Pokolistani Conquest[]
Return to Pokolistan[]

Phosphorus and the Task Force M return to Pokolistan
- "I think how we say it is, Keep moving, Alexi!"
"You want me to permanently damage vehicle?"
"Yes!" - ―Doctor Phosphorus and Alexi[src]
Upon arriving at Pokolistan Airport, the team was greeted enthusiastically by Alexi, with Phosphorus expressing gratitude to see him again. As Alexi escorted the team to the armored tank to take them to Poko Castle, he found it strange that they had returned so soon, hearing him claim that they had never had any threats in Pokolistan before initiating communications with the Americans. Alexi tried to convince Bride to talk about what kind of threat it was but she ignored him, with Phosphorus signaling to Alexi that it is what it is, before setting off towards the castle.

Phosphorus demands Alexi to keep moving
After receiving a call, Alexi changed routes under the pretense of avoiding traffic, confusing the team as Phosphorus and Bride shared suspicious glances, realizing that they were leaving the city and moving away from the castle, Bride became annoyed with Alexi and asked him where he was going, and he pretended to take a shortcut. Alexi later stopped at a dead end to kill time, trying to persuade them by claiming that the engine broke down, mimicking the noises. However, Phosphorus became angry at him demanding that he keep moving, even when Alexi warned that it would damage the vehicle.[9]
Ambush on the Creature Commandos[]

Phosphorus stops the missiles of the armored tank
The team was then surprised by the Amethyst Knights who arrived and pointed guns at them, with Alexi pointing his gun at Bride and revealing his loyalty to the princess, prompting Phosphorus to brutally punch him in the face, much to his pity as he liked him. Phosphorus and the team began to be fired upon by soldiers, taking cover until Bride was able to open the vehicle's doors, running to hide. Phosphorus saw a tank approaching him, so he confidently took off his shirt and pants, signaling to encourage them to fire, stopping the missiles without difficulty.

Phosphorus mocks the soldiers before killing them
Phosphorus angrily discharged his radiation energy as the tank approached him, melting it, giving them the middle finger by melting their faces, then leaving with his arms outstretched as the tank exploded behind him. After putting his pants back on, Phosphorus saw a soldier in critical condition with his limbs cut off begging for mercy, but without any empathy, Phosphorus melted his face by stepping on him, before hearing the police sirens, putting on his shirt and running away.[9]
Hiding from the Authorities[]

Phosphorus hides from the Amethyst Knights
- "Skelet."
"Skelet. Yeah. Skeleton. That's me."
"Priyatel Skelet."
"Not sure what that means." - ―Yana and Doctor Phosphorus[src]
After being separated from his teammates, Doctor Phosphorus hid inside a trash bin until nightfall, when he cautiously sneaked through the streets, avoiding detection by the Amethyst Knights pursuing him. Seeking refuge, he broke into a random family's home, hoping to find shelter. As he looked through the family’s photographs, memories of his past resurfaced—his life with his wife and son before the incident, their tragic deaths at the hands of Rupert Thorne, his horrific transformation, his revenge, his rise to power in the criminal underworld, and ultimately, his defeat.

Phosphorus feeds cereal to Yana
Lost in his thoughts, Phosphorus was startled by the sudden appearance of a little girl, Yana, who lived in the house. Despite the situation, he invited her to the kitchen for something to eat. Amused by his skeletal appearance, Yana affectionately nicknamed him "Priyatel Skelet" (translated as "Friend Skelet"). Her innocence and curiosity reminded him painfully of his late son, stirring feelings he had buried long ago. Though he initially warned her that she couldn’t know he was there, he found himself unable to resist spending time with her. They played together, and for a brief moment, Phosphorus felt a flicker of humanity.[2]
Invading the Castle[]

Phosphorus and the team on their way to kill the princess
- "Whoa! New look is hot."
"Now can it, Jack Skellington." - ―Doctor Phosphorus and the Bride of Frankenstein[src]
However, the sounds of their play alerted Yana’s parents, who were horrified to find the intruder in their garden. Understanding the need to leave, Phosphorus gently let Yana return to her parents. Before departing, he asked them for directions to the castle. Following their instructions, he made his way toward the indicated location and eventually reunited with his teammates. Upon seeing the Bride, he couldn’t resist complimenting her outfit, his tone tinged with his usual sarcasm.[2]

Phosphorus finds a tape of Ilana Rostovic with Clayface
The commandos took a guard from a tower by surprise by scaling it, where they saw Bride violently kill him, and when Nina became upset at the possibility that Rostovic was innocent and they were killing her for no reason, Phosphorus lit a cigarette and quoted in French "It is what it is", looking at her with contempt as she was just another human, and Weasel screeched which Phosphorus understood as an endorsement. Bride searched for an entrance to the castle by checking the cameras without success, so Phosphorus helped her by searching another computer, only to end up finding a tape of Rostovic with Clayface, which confused the team. Suddenly, they were scared to see Eric Frankenstein coming through the window, but Bride shot him, and when Phosphorus taunted her, Bride shut him up, calling him Ghost Rider.

Phosphorus and the team cross the wall
As to leave in case the guards had heard the shots, they headed to the garden wall as it was the least protected, jumping off the tower to escape, hiding behind a tree, where Bride executed her entry plan, asking Phosphorus to kill the monitoring guard, incinerating his mouth and then using his radioactive powers to incinerate the wall, warning that it would take time. After entering, the Commandos hid behind the trees watching the guards surround the lake to protect the princess who was swimming, getting frustrated when Weasel wanted to go with her, and Phosphorus suggested killing him, Bride and Nina flatly refused, freaking out Phosphorus who was just suggesting ideas.

Phosphorus is bitten by Weasel
As Rostovic was surrounded by guards, Bride came up with a plan to kill her, asking Nina to enter the pond and stab her, she initially rejected the idea, but Phosphorus reminded her of Waller's orders, and both he and Bride convinced her that she was a monster like them, giving her the courage. However when Mazursky approached Rostovic from behind, Weasel began to suffer from anxiety attacks, causing Phosphorus to scold him to keep quiet, which was to no avail as he was unable to remain hidden, jumping out of the bushes and splashing into the pond in an effort to warn the Princess, being discovered by her, Weasel nearly drowned and Phosphorus furiously scolded him, but Weasel bit his arm, causing it to hurt and causing him to throw it aside, burning his jaw in the process.

Phosphorus and his teammates leave Poko Castle
The worst came when Rostovic was able to fight back and kill Mazursky, being stunned to see her floating away, before being cornered by the guards, and Phosphorus raising his arms in surrender. Amanda Waller then comlinked Bride to report that the mission was aborted as they made a mistake. Inside the castle, Phosphorus jealously watched as the guards petting Weasel, arguing with Bride about it and learning that they shared the sentiment of not being touched. Bride then left, and when Phosphorus asked her where she was going, Bride promised that she would return. After killing the princess in revenge, Bride returned and asked her teammates to leave quickly, and as the trio left the castle, Bride cried for her friend, so Phosphorus touched her shoulder to comfort her.[3]
A New Team[]

Phosphorus plays ping-pong with Nosferata
- "I know Waller has a reputation as a hard ass, but she knows how to express gratitude when it's deserved. And you really saved the day. So we converted one of the abandoned wings for you and your team."
- ―John Economos to Bride of Frankenstein[src]
Back on Belle Reve Correctional Center, they were rewarded by A.R.G.U.S. for saving the world, creating a new iteration of the team that Phosphorus continued to be a part of, along with a reshuffle of the non-human division for their convenience. When Bride arrived to be appointed leader, Phosphorus was having fun playing ping-pong with his new teammate Nosferata.[3]
Personality[]
- "Are you smiling?"
"Yes."
"Sarcastically?"
"Mm-hmm." - ―Bride of Frankenstein and Doctor Phosphorus[src]
Prior to his mutation, Alex Sartorious was an honest family man who, despite knowing that he was working for bad people, wanted to do good with his research and cared for his family. The sheer trauma of having his wife and child murdered by Rupert Thorne and his mutation into a radioactive skeleton drove Alex completely mad, he became a sadistic person who enjoys killing people and never hesitates to resort to murder when possible, he cackled maniacally as he killed Rupert Thorne, his family, and his associates, before taking over his criminal operations. He threw a punchline when impaling and immolating a Son of Themyscira using his arm and later when he painfully burned Circe's face, despite the witch being already defenseless. For a brief time, Phosphorous openly embraced his new position as a supervillian, though it was quickly made apparent that this was little more than a coping mechanism over the loss of his family. Phosphoros' newfound wealth and power were short lived as he was soon aprehended by Batman.
Doctor Phosphorus is a cynical individual, who often behaves sarcastically with people around him, even if he tends to be subtle about it. He mocked Rick Flag's attempt to motivate the team while on their way to Pokolistan and later made fun of Alexi's old-fashioned American references. He proves to have some level of self-derision; joking about his skeleton appearance and perfectly aware that people can't tell his facial expressions.
Phosphorus is also very hotheaded, making impulsive decisions out of selfishness. He charged at Amanda Waller upon her arrival at Belle Reve Correctional Center and he attempted to kill Rick Flag, Sr. over the nano-bomb remote detonator, not caring if he was endangering the life of his comrades. He also had a vindictive behavior while facing Flag's scolding, despite the latter's harsh attitude being perfectly justified, following the earlier incident.
Despite his flaws, Phosphorus is not exempt of positive qualities. He is able to reflect on his mistakes, especially after Flag scolded him for his attempt to steal the remote, later trying to buy him time as he was having sex with Ilana Rostovic while Alexi was looking for them both. He shows some sort of complicity with his fellow teammates, like Bride, often trading sarcastic comments and verbal rapport. He also seems friendly with Weasel, despite seeing him as a "child killer" and a feral animal, even affectionately nicknaming him 'Weez'. He amicably patted G.I. Robot's shoulder, even after being threatened to get his head blown. At Belle Reve cafeteria, he took Nosferata's meal and gave it to Nina Mazursky after she was bullied by the vampire inmate and Congorilla. Due to the friendship they shared and being reminded of his son, Phosphorous chose not to kill Yana or her parents like he normally would despite knowing he was risking being captured by the Amethys Knights if he left any witnesses behind, and never once attempted to intentionally harm the little girl while playing with her, showing a glimmer of his former family loving self.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- "He has irradiated skin he can use to burn through people and objects."
"Well, how does that radiation affect the people around him?"
"If you don't sleep in the same room with him, the effects should be minimal."
"Minimal?"

Phosphorus producing deadly radiation from his body.
- Artificially Enhanced Physiology: After Sartorius was struck by the radioactive energy released from Gotham's nuclear power plant, his DNA and cells were altered, enabling him to manipulate radiation for various effects. Due to his unique physiology, Phosphorus possesses notable paranormal capabilities and attributes.
Phosphorus incinerates bullets with a radioactive energy barrier.
- Radiokinesis: Phosphorus can generate radiation from his body since his exposure to Gotham's nuclear power plant.
- Radiation Manipulation: Phosphorus can manipulate the radiation his body constantly generates, creating devastating beams of energy to attack his opponents. Phosphorus can melt through human skin in mere seconds simply by grabbing someone, though on some occasions it seems he can regulate the amount of radiation he releases so can touch someone in a non-fatal way albeit for a few seconds.
- Radiation Generation: Phosphorus can channel blasts of radiation from his hands, which he can use against his opponents, even incinerating fired bullets or missiles externally.
- Translucent Skin: His cellular structure was permanently imbued with the radiation that cured him, and thereafter his body glowed bright green, leaving his skin translucent showing his skeleton. During the Ambush on the Creature Commandos, he increased the radiation from his body to the point of passing through a military tank, cutting in half and destroying the vehicle.
- Pyrokinesis: Phosphorus can manifest glowing flames of radioactive fire, burning Rick Flag, Sr. during their battle and later seriously burned Circe's face, and when bitten by Weasel burned the latter's jaw. After punching through an enemy's torso, he incinerated him with ease.
Phosphorus smashes through a castle wall.
- Superhuman Strength: Phosphorus is considerably stronger than any human, allowing him to punch cleanly through the bodies of opponents and overpower them effortlessly and smash through solid concrete walls, yet notably he was unable to defeat Rick Flag, Sr. while attacking him despite his strength advantage and struggled to contend with the military official's superior fighting skills. He killed Alexi by punching his fist through his skull, and fended off the superhumanly strong Weasel with minimal effort when attacked.
- Superhuman Durability: Phosphorus' body is considerably durable compared to regular humans, withstanding gunfire and enduring a brutal beating from Rick Flag, Sr. unscathed and being unharmed from scratches and bites from Weasel.
- Superhuman Endurance: Phosphorus possesses advanced resistance to physical stresses, able to easily survive his neck being bent after a fall through a ceiling, setting it back into place without issue be before continuing to brawl with Rick Flag Sr. in a nonchalant manner.
- Advanced Speed: Phosphorus can move at fast speeds outpacing most humans, keeping pace with Rick Flag, Sr. while attacking him.
- Advanced Agility: Phosphorus is very agile and nimble in combat, managing to react to Rick Flag, Sr.'s attacks but proved unable to defeat him regardless. Phosphorus can jump and launch himself dozens of feet and across impressive distances.
- Radiokinesis: Phosphorus can generate radiation from his body since his exposure to Gotham's nuclear power plant.
Abilities[]
- Skilled Physician: Sartorius was an obstetrician.[10]
- Master Scientist: Before becoming a metahuman, Sartorius was a talented scientist primarily focused on researching a cure for cancer. He dedicated much of his time in the lab, working on a machine powered by radioactive components to advance his project.
Phosphorus fighting Rick Flag, Sr.
- Expert Combatant: Phosphorus is a deadly combatant using his powers, easily outmatching and mutilating opponents, but seemed outclassed by Batman and ended up defeated and captured. Despite proving no match for Rick Flag, Sr.'s superior combat skills, he showed great fighting prowess during their brawl, combining his radioactive powers with hand-to-hand combat techniques, landing a few decisive hits and burning Flag's hand, but ultimately was subdued and scolded by Flag. He later demonstrated his combat prowess by repelling persistent attacks by an aggressive Weasel.
- Skilled Tactician: After transforming into Doctor Phosphorus and exacting his revenge on Rupert Thorne, Sartorius became a cunning and influential mobster, seizing control of Thorne's criminal empire. Using a combination of intimidation, manipulation, and strategic influence, he compelled Thorne's former associates to pledge their loyalty to him. Phosphorus rose to prominence as he became one of Gotham City's most notorious crime lords, until he was ultimately taken down by Batman.
- Skilled Businessman: After taking over Rupert Thorne's criminal empire, Phosphorus demonstrated efficient business management skills. He efficiently led his organization in various illegal operations, generating vast amounts of money and enabling him to maintain a life of wealth and luxury.
Facilities[]
- Sartorius Residence: Before his transformation, Sartorius lived with his wife and son in their family home in the suburbs of Gotham City. Their peaceful life came to a tragic end when Rupert Thorne's men murdered his family and framed him for the crime.
- Sartorius Labs: Sartorius conducted his research on a nuclear fusion treatment for cancer in his personal lab in Gotham City. However, his work was stolen by Rupert Thorne and his gang, who then forced him into his own radioactive reactor, transforming him into Doctor Phosphorus. The lab was left abandoned following this tragic incident.
- Poko Castle: During his mission to protect Ilana Rostovic with the rest of the Creature Commandos, Phosphorus was offered hospitality at Poko Castle. Taking advantage of the situation, he attempted to steal the Nano-Bomb Remote Detonator from Rick Flag, Sr., leading to a duel that caused several damage inside the castle.
Prisons[]
- Belle Reve Correctional Center: After his encounter with the vigilante Batman, Phosphorus was sentenced to Belle Reve's non-human division. He would later be recruited by Amanda Waller to join Task Force M.

Trivia[]
- In the comics, Doctor Phosphorus is a radioactive super-villain who fights Batman. After an explosion, his body chemistry was fundamentally altered to phosphorus so that his skin would permanently burn in an eternal flame. He also inspired 2 two others Batman's foes with similar powers; Phosphorus Rex and Blight.
- In his initial promotional image, his skin was orange and his eyes were visible. The final version ended up with bright green skin and no visible eyes.
- Rick Flag, Sr. refers to him as "Jason and the Argonauts", likely a reference to the 1963 film where several animated skeletons were fought during the climax.
Behind the Scenes[]
- The animators considered morphing the character's skeleton to show expressions, but they eventually decided that his lack of expressions suited the character. They also incorporated the Kirby Krackle effect into his flaming skin.[11][12]
