Dr. Edward Mazursky was a highly respected scientist in the world specialized in bio genetics. He became well known and highly esteemed after he genetically engineered rice, which, as a result, helped to feed entire nations. At some point he married a woman named Lyla and she got pregnant. However during the birth, the couple was shocked that their daughter was suffering from severe lung problems due to the lungs being outside her body. After receiving the medical records, the doctor recommended Edward use his scientific intellect to develop methods to keep her alive, which he appreciated, saying that her name was Nina, and built a mechanical device to pump her lungs.

One day, Mazursky was at his residence playing with his daughter, showing her that her toy was a caterpillar and not a donkey, helping her up when she fell. However, Lily went into the kitchen to cry, and when Edward came out to see her, she expressed her frustration at seeing Nina as a burden, worrying that Edward would have to keep building her a tank as she grew, but he claimed to be willing to create a new one for her, but Lily believed it was a mistake not to unplug her, remarks sparked a backlash from Edward. Lily expressed her intentions to move in with her mother as she was no longer willing to raise Nina and they eventually divorced.[1]

"Yes, well, Nina, from birth, had issues with her lungs. She wasn't able to breathe properly. So I tried to infuse her biology with elements of aquatic animals thinking that would... well, she's no longer in pain."
―Edward Mazursky to Gale[src]

As Nina's health had declined, Mazursky was forced to build heavier suits for her. Willing to take risks to save her, Mazursky set out to transform her DNA to help her breathe despite the fluid in her lungs, which involved infusing her biology with elements of aquatic animals. After taking Nina for a walk in a park, Mazursky brought her to his lab to implant the changes into her DNA. However, the experiment detected malformations that caused her to begin convulsing and Mazursky to panic as she began to develop aquatic gills. Mazursky quickly took her to a sink to douse her in water, and despite warnings from his colleagues that he might be drowning her, Nina began to breathe, which surprised him.[1]

"She's been home schooled. She speaks four languages and is well versed in Shakespeare and calculus. But I thought she might be better off attending school with other children for socialization purposes. I mean, honestly, she's only known me."
―Edward Mazursky to Gale[src]

As Nina grew older, Mazursky homeschooled his daughter, being the only person she knew, so concerned about his daughter's socialization, he visited Principal Gale's office at Emberton Prep to enroll her. At the meeting, Mazursky spoke to the principal about his daughter's breathing problems that led him to turn her into an amphibious metahuman. When Gale asked if Nina always had to use the oxygen tank, Mazursky said that she could only breathe water and spoke of his intentions to get Nina to socialize, and after Gale agreed to enroll her, Mazursky celebrated and asked Nina to thank Gale.
