After years of homeschooling, Nina Mazursky's father enrolled her at the private Emberton Prep School to help her socialize. At the enrollment meeting with Principal Gale, Edward Mazursky mentioned that Nina had become an amphibious metahuman due to severe lung problems. When Gale asked if Nina always had to use an oxygen tank, Mazursky said she could only breathe water, seeking to enroll her so she could socialize, which Gale agreed to. Nina thanked Gale and soon joined the lacrosse team after seeing a vintage photo.
Despite her efforts to fit into school, Nina Mazursky was heavily intimidated by her appearance, often called a frog. When she played lacrosse, her classmates pushed and insulted her, and once walking down the hallways, she was harassed by two students who threatened her by pushing her against the locker to make frog noises, making her tear out of teasing. On one occasion, her classmates annoyed her by placing a frog in her locker; unable to stand the bullying, Nina decided to run away from home and live in isolation, and before disappearing, Nina left a letter for her father thanking him for everything he had done for her.[1]
