- In the comics, Hal Jordan is the second Green Lantern of Earth, after Alan Scott, and served as a military test pilot before being chosen by the wayward Power Ring of the dying Green Lantern Abin Sur as his successor. He is considered the greatest Green Lantern, an intergalactic law enforcer and member of the Green Lantern Corps, chosen by the Guardians of the Universe for his ability to overcome great fear, trained as a rookie by veteran Lantern turned his eventual archenemy Sinestro.

- Hal Jordan in the DC Universe is the third live-action incarnation of the character, following incarnations portrayed by Howard Murphy and Ryan Reynolds.
- When asked if Ryan Reynolds was considered to return as Hal Jordan for Lanterns, James Gunn joked "One of the first people I talked to after I got the job was Ryan Reynolds. I was like, ‘You coming back?!’ He’s like, ‘Get the f— out of here!'”[5]
- Josh Brolin was offered the role of Hal Jordan, but he ultimately passed on it.[6]
