Marschall Saber, also known as Saber, was a former subordinate of Withers and an enemy of Vigilante.

Marshall Saber was working as a bodyguard for the revamped gangster Withers in Evergreen, who used to be known as Donna Omicidio, but unbeknownst to her, Saber was secretly having a romantic relationship with Cannon of the Lil' T's Gang, pretending to be archenemies in public to avoid suspicion from them. Cannon and Saber worked patiently together to execute a plan to kill their mob leaders and seize their criminal empires together.[1]

Saber accompanied Withers to an informal meeting with the Scarapelli gang that was to take place at Axe Me Again. Upon arrival, Saber expressed his displeasure to Withers at the way Cannon was looking at him, although she made him realize it was because of his costume, comparing him to Rambo and Kermit the Frog. When they were reunited, Vigilante burst in, throwing an axe at a henchman confronting the criminals, prompting Withers to order him to kill Vigilante.

Saber asked his rival Cannon to get out of his way; however, Cannon mocked his appearance. Vigilante saw the two approaching him, so he fought them hand-to-hand, grabbing Saber's arm, with which he accidentally shot Cannon, and with his enemies weakened, Vigilante smashed both their heads together, knocking them to the ground.[2]

That night, Saber learned that Vigilante had stopped by the Withering Heights Nursing Home to rip the face off one of Withers's guards, vowing to find the Controller and rescue the Peacemaker. In the morning, Saber helped the guard walk to the meeting with Withers and Scarapelli, gently asking Cannon to step aside, prompting his rival to insult him. Saber encouraged the guard to reveal to Scarapelli what Vigilante had sworn to. Scarapelli and Withers then forged an alliance to defeat Vigilante, where Saber and Cannon watched them shake hands and swear to implement a "scorched earth" policy.[3]

After Scarapelli and Withers announced they were providing vehicles for free at the Evergreen Docks shipping and storage facility, Saber was assigned to serve the visiting homeless people. When a homeless woman working there asked if there was a catch, Saber said no and that she could do whatever she wanted with the car after receiving the keys, which confused her. Saber stated that he didn't understand either and was just doing his job.

However, Vigilante arrived with a rocket launcher and raid the facility once the homeless people left, seeking to wipe out the Controller's army. When Vigilante grabbed a machine gun and began firing wildly, Saber shot him with his revolver; both he and Cannon intervened to attack him, but Vigilante hit them in the face with the machine gun, knocking them to the ground. Vigilante took Saber's revolver and threatened them both, but after feigning submission, Cannon took him by surprise, stabbing him seriously with his sai, however he managed to escape, and Saber was surprised that the stab did not kill him.[3]

When the Evergreen Police Department went to investigate, Saber watched them from a sniper scope, asking Withers to let him shoot the police since there was still a lot of money left at the docks, but she refused. Saber, however, reminded her that she used to be Lady Homicide, dedicating herself to killing those who touched her money, prompting an argument between Withers and Scarapelli, which Saber and Cannon overheard, where they agreeing to attend an investor gala at Fennel Fields.[4]

While the Fennel Fields catering event was taking place, Saber and Cannon were in the back alley by the dumpsters, forcing Withers to confront Vigilante herself when he attacked the establishment as they rushed to arrive, however, they were forced to flee as they knew the Evergreen Police Department were on the way. Vigilante found a condom on the ground in the back alley, assuming that Cannon or Saber had dropped it.[4]

Saber and Cannon caught Withers and Scarapelli off guard, who abducted their leaders and took them to a Pacific Association room where they tied them to chairs and confessed to treason. Their goal was to torture them into giving up their rightful property and then kill them in an effort to usurp their authority and establish a criminal empire. Due to their alleged rivalry, the gangster Quilt initially turned down the two's demand for a position in the organization. Cannon persuaded Quilt that they were necessary to face the threat posed by Vigilante, who was always attacking the group, and that if they agreed, they could teach their members how to defeat him. Quilt then accepted them into his gang in spite of the mistrust of the other members.

Quilt was knocked unconscious when Vigilante suddenly assaulted the association and started hurling his gadgets at the building. Both Cannon and Saber were caught off guard, and Cannon advised him to avoid the windows for his own protection. As they still needed their leaders to carry out their plan, Saber and Cannon rushed to the room where they were detaining them to look for them, and Saber expressed his incomprehension as to how Vigilante found them. As Vigilante confronted the organization members, killing Hammer and Brand, Saber and Cannon approached the door, where Saber admitted that their plan had fallen apart, but Cannon encouraged him to continue, and when they expected to have no more surprises, they were shocked to see Scarapelli and Withers having sex, only for Vigilante to ambush them, shouting his desire to kill Cannon and Saber, who raised their weapons to defend themselves from him.[1]

Saber feinted Vigilante's sword and was assisted by Cannon, who launched his sai at Chase, shattering his glasses. Saber pushed Vigilante to the ground and aimed his revolver at him. Saber thanked Vigilante because, thanks to him, Donna Omicidio and Lil' T didn't see his and Cannon's betrayal coming, loading his gun to kill Vigilante, whom he said he almost felt sorry for having to kill him. However, Vigilante violently threw his condom in his face, brutally grabbing his arm to pull the revolver out of his hand, and blasting his face off.[5]

  • Expert Combatant: Saber is an expert hand-to-hand combatant, working for Donna Omicidio until betraying her. Saber served as her bodyguard, coming into conflict with Vigilante who interrupted their plans, fighting him several times until being killed by his enemy.
  • Expert Marksman: Saber is an experienced revolver shooter, carrying two trademark revolvers, which he used to protect Donna Omicidio until betraying her. When Vigilante invaded Evergreen Docks, Saber managed to land a shot on his enemy, allowing Cannon to stab him with a sai.

Weapons[]

  • Revolvers: Saber uses dual revolvers, possessing excellent firearm accuracy. However, Saber accidentally shot Cannon during his fight with Vigilante when he snatched his arm. When Vigilante invaded Evergreen Docks, Saber shot him with his revolver to neutralize him.
  • Sniper Riffle: Saber used a sniper scope to spot the Evergreen Police Department as they investigated Evergreen Docks, failing to obtain Withers' permission to shoot them.

  • Saber Suit: Saber wears a green military uniform with a matching headscarf, accompanied by yellow goggles that cover his eyes to conceal his identity and provide protection in combat. These goggles contrast with his reddish-orange hair.

  • In the comics, Marschall Saber, nicknamed Saber, is a hitman and enemy of Vigilante, frequently partnered with Cannon. He was a freelance assassin working for a crime boss named Liebowitz, while his partner Cannon worked for another mobster, Rinaldi. The pair orchestrated a plan, at the behest of District Attorney Marcia King, to assassinate each other's bosses to create a power vacuum and allow her to seize control. Their actions eventually brought them into conflict with Vigilante (Adrian Chase). Saber debuted in Vigilante #5 (April 1984) and was created by Marv Wolfman, Keith Pollard, and Romeo Tanghal.
