Edward Mazursky meets his daughter
- "Yes, well, Nina, from birth, had issues with her lungs. She wasn't able to breathe properly. So I tried to infuse her biology with elements of aquatic animals thinking that would... well, she's no longer in pain."
- ―Edward Mazursky to Gale[src]
Lily and Edward Mazursky bought a residence in Star City where they had their daughter, Nina Mazursky, but when she was born, they learned that she suffered from severe respiratory problems, which caused Lily great anguish. Her father, who was a renowned scientist, created a mechanical device to pump her lungs, which saved her life, however Lily believed that keeping her was too cruel, so she decided to abandon her and divorce Edward when she was still a little girl to move to her mother's house.

Nina Mazursky is transformed into an amphibious metahuman
Nina's health began to decline, and her father was forced to build her heavier versions of the respirator, and willing to take any risk to save her, Edward attempted to alleviate her condition by injecting her with fish DNA. After taking her for a walk in a park, suffering breathing difficulties while walking, her father took her to his lab to implant the alterations in her DNA, and despite his colleagues' warnings, the effects were successful, transforming her into an amphibious metahuman.

Nina Mazursky is bullied by her classmates at Emberton Prep
After years of homeschooling, Nina's father enrolled her in Emberton Prep in Star City to help her socialize. At the enrollment meeting with Principal Gale, Edward Mazursky introduced Nina to her and explained that she had to use an oxygen tank after being turned into an amphibious metahuman, to which Gale agreed to enroll her. Despite her efforts to fit in at school, Nina was bullied for her appearance, often treated like a frog. While playing on the lacrosse team, her teammates pushed and insulted her, and once, walking through the halls, she was harassed by two students who forced her to make frog noises against her will.

Nina Mazursky leaves the human world
After her classmates teased her by placing a frog in her locker, Nina became unable to continue to endure the harassment, so she decided to run away from home and live in isolation in the sewers of Star City, and before disappearing, Nina left a letter to her father thanking him for all he had done for her, but expressing her feelings that she did not fit in the human world and that she wished to be free. Upon returning from work, Edward Mazursky found the letter, crying inconsolably in the rain as Nina opened a manhole to escape, feeling happy about her decision.[1]
