Superman is an upcoming superhero film based on the DC Comics superhero of the same name. It is the first film in the DC Universe, the second installment of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, its first live-action installment, and a cinematic reboot of the Superman film series. The film is set to be released on July 11, 2025.
Synopsis[]
Superman, DC Studios' first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC Universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who's driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.[4]

On December 14, 2022, James Gunn announced a Superman movie focused on the younger years of Superman's life that would not feature Henry Cavill in the role, and also clarified that it was not an origin film and that he was the one writing for the film with a director still yet to be chosen.[21] Variety then confirmed that the film would depict Kent as an "inexperienced cub reporter" at the Daily Planet in Metropolis and that Lois Lane would appear as his colleague.[22]
On January 31, 2023, James Gunn announced the first part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters in the DC Universe, with the movie centered in Superman, titled Superman: Legacy, as one of the projects, and a release date scheduled for July 11, 2025.[3]
On March 15, 2023, Gunn confirmed that he will be directing the film.[1]
On April 18, 2023, Gunn announced that pre-production of the film has officially begun.[23] Along with that he also confirms Jimmy Olsen would appear in the film.[24]
On May 7, 2023, Gunn revealed that the film would feature Krypto the Superdog.[25]
On May 11, 2023, Gunn announced that the film would start filming in January 2024.[26]
On May 13, 2023, Lex Luthor was revealed to be in the film, it also was revealed that David Corenswet, Jacob Elordi, Tom Brittney, Andrew Richardson, and Pierson Fodé[27] were being considered to portray Superman; while Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan, Phoebe Dynevor, and Samara Weaving are contending to play Lois Lane. It was also revealed that Nicholas Hoult was the only actor being considered for the role of Lex Luthor, after he was speculated to have been previously up for the role of Superman.[28] That same day, Gunn announced that he was eyeing actors he previously worked with for the role of Lex Luthor with testing beginning for a part simply labeled “Apex”.[29]
On June 9, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Authority would be introduced in the film.[19]
On June 13, 2023, it was revealed that Henry Braham had joined the film as the cinematographer.[30]
On June 26, 2023, screen tests apparently took place over Father's Day weekend, which also mentioned that Alexander Skarsgard and Bill Skarsgard are also on the shortlist to play Lex Luthor.[31]
On June 27, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan were cast in the lead roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively.[32]
On July 11, 2023, Vanity Fair revealed in an exclusive that Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and Nathan Fillion were cast as Hawkgirl, Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, and Guy Gardner/Green Lantern.[33] The Hollywood Reporter revealed the next day that Anthony Carrigan was cast as Rex Mason/Metamorpho.[34]
On October 10, 2023, Variety revealed that Jason Momoa has officially engaged in talks to play Lobo, either in Superman: Legacy or in a standalone film.[35]
On November 8, 2023, Deadline reported that after the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike concluded, the filming start date was shifted to March 2024.[36]
On November 15, 2023, Deadline reported that María Gabriela De Faría joined the cast as Angela Spica/Engineer.[37]
On November 20, 2023, Deadline reported that Nicholas Hoult was in talks to portray Lex Luthor[38] and the next day, it was also reported that Sara Sampaio and Skyler Gisondo had joined the cast as Eve Teschmacher and Jimmy Olsen.[5][39]

On January 24, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Supergirl would make her debut in the film, with Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly and Emilia Jones screen testing in Atlanta.[43]

On February 22, 2024, James Gunn posted a group selfie with himself, Peter Safran, and the cast. This included the previously unannounced Terence Rosemore as Otis.[10]
On February 29, 2024, in honor of the character's 86th birthday in the comics, Gunn announced that filming had officially begun. Alongside the announcement, the film was officially retitled to Superman and a first look at the new Superman suit was released.[45][46]

On April 16, 2024, TheWrap reported that Pruitt Taylor Vince had been cast as Jonathan Kent.[47] The next day, TheWrap reported that Neva Howell had been cast as Martha Kent.[8]
On June 5, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Beck Bennett joined the cast of the film as a Daily Planet reporter.[48] Later that day, James Gunn confirmed in an Instagram post that Bennett would be portraying Steve Lombard.[49]
On June 7, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald had joined the cast as Cat Grant and Ron Troupe, respectively.[50]
On June 25, 2024, set photos revealed that Frank Grillo would reprise his role as Rick Flag, Sr. in the film.[9]
On July 2, 2024, set photos revealed that Will Reeve would portray a to-be-confirmed role in the film.[51] It would be confirmed by Variety later that day.[14]
On July 30, 2024, James Gunn revealed on social media that filming had officially wrapped.[52]
On September 26, 2024, Deadline reported that Alan Tudyk had joined the cast in a to-be-confirmed role.[7]
On December 6, 2024, reports came out that the film would have reshoots. James Gunn later responded on Threads saying "“No scenes. No reshoots. Just a handful of individual shots to enhance the film."[53]
