On January 31, 2023, James Gunn announced the first part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, with Swamp Thing as one of the projects.[2] The next day, The Hollywood Reporter reported that James Mangold was in talks to direct the film, with Mangold himself seemingly teasing the news with a photo of the character posted on his Twitter account.[3]
On April 8, 2023, James Gunn retweeted an interview with Mangold that confirmed Mangold would be writing for the film. Gunn further elaborated that one of the first people he had talked to about the DCU was Mangold about the potential for writing and directing the film. In the linked interview however, when asked about the possibility of directing, Mangold would only go as far as confirming his involvement as a writer, citing possible commitments to other projects.[1]
