Biography[]
Early Life[]
- "Sydney Happersen. MIT super genius. Literally wrote the book on dimensional interconnectivity. Then he threw it all away to come work with Luthor."
- ―Rick Flag, Sr. and Sasha Bordeaux[src]
Sydney Happersen grew up in the Narrows, a poor neighborhood in Gotham City.[2] In adulthood, he left Gotham City and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he made a name for himself as a super genius. He later became the world's leading expert on dimensional interconnectivity. He became a professor at the university after graduation and tutored an eight-year-old Lex Luthor.[3] Due to his extensive knowledge of dimensional portals, he later began working as a LuthorCorp technician under Luthor[4] and invented the Dimensional Portal technology for the corporation.[3]
Boravian-Jarhanpurian War[]
Duel of Metropolis[]
Happersen talks to the technician about Lex Luthor's studies
- "It's like he knows Superman's every move before he makes it."
"He does. He's been studying him for years." - ―Boravian Technician and Sydney Happersen[src]
In May 2025, Happersen and other technicians were at LuthorCorp Tower to guide Luthor's creation, Ultraman, who used an armor to act as the "Hammer of Boravia" to destroy a Chocos Biscuits Company building in Metropolis before Superman returned to confront him while they were preparing the Dimensional Portal. Happersen and the technicians programmed Ultraman's attacks to override Superman's moves, defeating him. After the battle, Happersen explained to a Boravian technician how Luthor had studied all of the hero's attacks since his first appearance before transporting Ultraman back to the tower using the portal at Fort Kramer.[5]
Attack on Metropolis[]
Happersen releases the Kaiju
While Lex Luthor and his PlanetWatch subordinates infiltrated the Fortress of Solitude to gain information that would help them incriminate Superman and present him as a threat to the United States Department of Defense, Happersen and Otis Berg were given the mission to transport their small pet Kaiju at night to Metropolis, where they released it from its cage at night in a park, where the creature began to breathe fire. Incredulous, Happersen doubted that the Kaiju would serve as a distraction, but Berg assured him that it would get bigger, which the monster successfully did to battle Superman and the Justice Gang before Luthor revealed to the world Superman's parents conquest message.[5]
Battle of Metropolis[]
Happersen warns Lex Luthor about the rift
- "Lex! I'm closing the freakin' rift."
"No! They chose him! Let them die! We'll close it from the bunker before it gets to a city I care about." - ―Sydney Happersen and Lex Luthor[src]
Later, Lex Luthor was informed by the Raptors about Superman's escape from the Pocket Universe after previously arresting him, causing him to suffer a fit of rage against his employees and girlfriend at LuthorCorp Tower. Happersen informed Luthor about the destruction of the Dimensional Portal during the escape, however, Luthor decided to cause an dimensional rift with the remains of the portal remotely to force Superman into action. Quickly, Happersen and Angela Spica attempted to warn him about the risk of opening it again, though the technician opposed his plan, although Luthor insisted that they could close the aperture later.
Happersen is concerned about the rift
With no other options, Happersen agreed to allow Luthor to use the command center to open a rift in Metropolis, forcing all residents to evacuate. The next morning, Happersen grew terrified by the rift's proximity to the tower and attempted to urge Luthor to retreat before they could be reached, so Luthor ordered Otis Berg to pull a lever that turned a portion of the tower into a hovercraft. Happersen reacted with fear, questioning where they would land when the rift destroyed Earth. When Superman was confronted by Engineer and Ultraman at LordTech Field, Happersen and the technicians quickly guided Ultraman through their commands to confront him while Engineer infected Superman with her nanites, suffocating him. Happersen and his colleagues watched as Superman rose into space with Ultraman and Engineer before descending into the underground part of the field, where they continued to aid Ultraman.
Happersen is pushed by Mister Terrific
During the battle, Superman, with the help of his Kryptonian dog Krypto, was able to defeat Ultraman and the Raptors sent by Luthor, whose plan ended in failure. Happersen decided to close the rift, but Luthor prevented his decision, ordering him to let all the civilians die while they waited for the rift to reach a city he cared about. Before fleeing with the portal, Superman arrived at the tower in time to stop Luthor, accompanied by Mister Terrific, to whom Happersen attempted to offer his help, but the hero rejected him to successfully close the rift on his own before seeing Krypto savagely attack Luthor. After closing the anomaly, Happersen saw all the news channels report on the conspiracy of Luthor and President Vasil Ghurkos of Boravia, clearing Superman's reputation. Upon descending on the city, Happersen and his colleagues were arrested by the Metropolis Police Department and United States Armed Forces for their crimes[5] and sent to Belle Reve Correctional Center.[2]
Helping A.R.G.U.S[]
Tracking Peacemaker[]
Happersen talks with Rick Flag, Sr.
- "Well, then...I don't mean to be antagonistic, but...what's my reason for helping you?"
"I don't know, Happersen. Luthor said tell him just to do it, and you would do it. I can go back and tell him his boy let him down."
"No. I was just asking." - ―Sydney Happersen and Rick Flag, Sr.[src]
In June 2025, Happersen was brought to the recovered LuthorCorp communication hub, where he met Rick Flag, Sr., the director of A.R.G.U.S. Flag informed him that Lex Luthor referred his former technician as someone capable of tracking dimensional portals using the hub's panel. Initially, Happersen inquired whether his cooperation might reduce his sentence, but Flag quickly shut down the idea. Instead, he threatened to inform Luthor if Happersen refused to comply. Fearful of his former employer, Happersen reluctantly agreed.
Happersen prepares to watch porn
Happersen began scanning the area surrounding Washington state, and it didn't take long for him to pinpoint an open dimensional portal located at Adrian Chase's residence in Evergreen. Pleased with the result, Flag commended him and implied that Happersen's help would be required again before taking his leave. Taking advantage of his free time with internet connection, Happersen decided to watch porn, warning an A.R.G.U.S. guard in advance of staining the entire desk.[4]
Working for A.R.G.U.S[]
- "Did you watch the Prawns game last night?"
- ―John Economos to Sydney Happersen[src]
Following Peacemaker's arrest and the confiscation of the interdimensional device, A.R.G.U.S. partnered with LuthorCorp technicians to launch a campaign to find an uninhabited dimension capable of supporting Earth-like life, sending agents to investigate through the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. In one of the initial operations, the agents were sent to Candyland, where they were restrained by Imps who mutilated Kline. Despite the tragic accident, the agents continued to be sent to dimensions as scapegoats, while Happersen and the other technicians supervised. On duty, Happersen and another technician began snorting cocaine, regretting it when Otis Berg saw them with a threatening expression. While the agents risked their lives, Berg and the others laughed and took swigs.
Happersen bonds with Rick Flag, Sr. and his coworkers
When the agents discovered Salvation, Flag sought to use the planet to imprison metahumans due to their dangerousness, so that they could never return. Happersen and Berg devised a method to travel there without using the Quantum Unfolding Chamber and were invited to the project's presentation at the Pentagon. Happersen listened to Flag's presentation, where Stephen Mori expressed admiration for the idea, and upon leaving, Happersen gave Flag a friendly nudge on the elbow.
While working in the A.R.G.U.S. Warehouse, John Economos tried to chat Happersen up by asking if he'd seen the game the previous night, even though Otis Berg and Vega had pointed out there hadn't been a game. However, Economos continued talking, engaging them in awkward conversation that confused them, making jokes, which futher confused Happersen, but with one of the jokes making Ali Jessop laugh.[1]
Personality[]
Happersen is extremely loyal to Lex Luthor, having abandoned his scientific career to work for him and offering his assistance to A.R.G.U.S. only because Luthor ordered him to, when Happersen asked Rick Flag, Sr. what he would receive in return for helping them, Flag threatened to tell Luthor that he hadn't helped them if he didn't accept. Happersen backed down and committed to the agency so as not to disappoint Luthor. Happersen also suffers from addictions, both to pornography and cocaine.
