The tourmaline necklace was owned by a woman when she died. Her body, including the necklace, was sent to Victor Frankenstein for the purposes of building a bride for his creation.

Frankenstein began teaching the Bride how to speak, and at one point asked her to identify the term "necklace." The Bride said that it was pretty, with which Frankenstein agreed. Frankenstein then taught the Bride the word "necklace" using the tourmaline necklace. This led to a burgeoning romance between Frankenstein and the Bride, culminating in them having sex, which Frankenstein's creation saw. The creation killed Frankenstein in hopes of getting the Bride to love him, causing the Bride to flee, leaving the tourmaline necklace at Frankenstein Manor.[1]

Hoping to get the tourmaline necklace back, the Bride of Frankenstein returned to Frankenstein Manor with Nina Mazursky. They searched the manor, and Mazursky eventually found the necklace, giving it to the Bride.[1]
