"I'm into sex because, like a lot of people, it's an opportunity to bond with my best friend."
―Adrian Chase to Chris Smith[src]

Adrian Allen Chase is a quirky, charismatic restaurant busboy who operates by night as the ruthless and bloodthirsty Vigilante. He is a founding member of the 11th Street Kids, and personally idolizes Peacemaker, naively believing they are best friends. When his idol Peacemaker was brought back to justice, Chase joined him and his black ops team to investigate the mysterious Project Butterfly. Chase bonded with the team and befriended everyone, but he and Smith became fugitives because of the Butterflies. Vigilante and his teammates killed off the Butterflies along with the Cow during a battle at Coverdale Ranch, completing the mission. After Leota Adebayo cleared their names, Chase and Smith stopped being fugitives and began to be seen as heroes.

When Chris Smith began being hunted by A.R.G.U.S. under the leadership of the vengeful Rick Flag, Sr., Chase and Leota Adebayo teamed up to protect him from capture by the agency; however, Smith fled to an alternate universe to replace his deceased counterpart and live with his alternate family. In search of their friend, the 11th Street Kids regrouped to bring him back, with Chase encountering his counterpart, whom he joined to help the team and Judomaster escape after discovering the fascist government of that universe. After bailing Smith out of Evergreen Correctional Facility, Chase decided to combat the corruption of A.R.G.U.S., joining Checkmate as an agent.

Early Life[]

Friendship with Peacemaker[]

"Is your best friend Peacemaker?"
―Vigilante to Vigilante[src]

Adrian Chase was the younger brother of Gut Chase, who was in turn a friend of Christopher Smith, known as Peacemaker, though Adrian and Gut were not on good terms.[3] While growing up, Adrian's father came out as gay and left his mother for another man. Adrian Chase eventually graduated from Evergreen High School.[4] Sometime later, he became a violent vigilante known as Vigilante, using a special suit to fight crime and met Peacemaker, whom he quickly became a fan of, considering him his best friend; they worked together on a few occasions.[5]

During his crusade, Chase dedicated himself to eliminating criminal gangs, including drug cartels whose belongings were seized and kept in the basement of his house since he could not risk it falling under the control of corrupt law enforcement officers, refusing to throw away the drugs because he believed they could affect the sewer reptiles. Chase had a collection of Beanie Babies in his lair, which he wanted to sell when their market value increased.[4] Chase also began working as a busboy at Fennel Fields. After Peacemaker was arrested, Vigilante continued sending friendly voicemails to his phone.[5] Working at Fennel Fields, Chase believed Dave was his friend, even though Dave never felt the same way. When Dave got married, Chase showed up uninvited.[1]

In January 2023, Vigilante visited Chris Smith's Trailer and saw Smith crying through the window, once Smith noticed, he berated Chase, as Smith got nervous that Chase might pull his crotch out to cum on him.[6] Upon entering the house, Chase discovered that Smith was free to work for the government and believed he was a mailman, but Smith replied that he was there to kill people.[1]

Vigilante comforted Smith by admitting that he enjoyed killing people for graffiti, and although he admitted that he sometimes made mistakes in killing people, it was not something he used to do. As Smith began to have second thoughts about killing people for peace at any cost, Vigilante tried to comfort him and invited him to shoot several appliances, having fun together, and later sought out Amber Calcaterra for sex between the three of them.[6]

Attack on Royland Goff[]

When Peacemaker went on a mission with his undercover team, Vigilante followed them, hiding behind a bush upon arriving at the Goff Residence. Upon revealing himself, Chase gently placed his hands on Smith's shoulders and asked him to let him do his job. Peacemaker turned away and let Vigilante fire on the family, killing the wife and children. As Vigilante was about to kill Goff, Judomaster appeared to interrupt them, sparking a fight where Chase and Smith were taken hostage.

With Chase tied up, they removed his mask, but Chase began grimacing, believing that this would prevent him from being discovered, while Harcourt, Murn, and Adebayo went to save them. Vigilante was tortured by Goff, who placed electrodes on his scrotum, to force Peacemaker to give him information, but Smith refused, despite Vigilante's demands that Smith give him some information. Peacemaker broke free and fought Goff, and upon defeating him, Vigilante and Peacemaker discovered that the Project Butterfly was an operation against alien butterflies when they saw one emerge from Goff's face.[7]

Attack on Auggie Smith[]

Upon leaving Goff Residence, Vigilante suffered the loss of half his pinky toe, and at the headquarters, he was recruited to join the special operations team as he had no problem killing and they needed him. Vigilante and Peacemaker drove to Auggie Smith's house, and during the drive, Chase maintained a passive-aggressive attitude, slightly angering Smith. At Auggie Smith's house, the duo entered the Quantum Unfolding Chamber to retrieve Peacemaker's Helmets. Chase talked about his pinky toe and described himself as his best friend, which confused Smith, and they saw the White Dragon Armor.[8] Chase then had an argument with Peacemaker about his father being a racist.[1]

On their way out, Peacemaker learned from Auggie's neighbor that his father had been sent to prison after being framed by John Economos for a crime he committed. Leota Adebayo manipulated Chase to kill Smith's father, so he got himself arrested and attacked him, failing on killing him, and was later freed by Economos.[8]

Glan Tai Massacre[]

After discovering a connection between the Glan Tai Bottling Company and the Butterflies, the team met at Henenlotter Video to receive their mission to travel to Glan Tai. Upon arrival, Leota Adebayo and Emilia Harcourt played rock, paper, scissors and had to ally with Vigilante, where Harcourt lost. Vigilante showed off his chainsaw, hoping to kill someone, but Harcourt got angry and told him it wasn't practical since they were trying to be stealthy.

Once they completed their mission, the team had fun driving home, listening to the “11th Street Kids” and dancing, where Harcourt took the opportunity to take a photo. Harcourt later created a chat group named “11th Street Kids,” making the team name official, and sent the photo, which everyone celebrated, and Vigilante responded with a mermaid emoji.[9]

Chased by the Police[]

"Dude! We're saving the world from a fucking alien invasion!"
―Vigilante to Peacemaker[src]

When Vigilante arrived to visit Smith in his trailer, "Goff" used the amber liquid to create a peace symbol, attempting to communicate with them, who decided to interview him. Peacemaker asked "Goff" to answer yes-or-no questions, but Chase did not understand the rules, making Smith angry, who yelled in his face. However, when the police arrived at Smith's house to arrest him, Vigilante, Eagly, and Peacemaker escaped through the roof, with Chase carrying "Goff" on his back, climbing the trees, but accidentally fell to the ground, and the jar broke, allowing Goff to take Sophie Song as her host.

Vigilante and Peacemaker fled through the woods, but when they were surrounded by police, Captain Caspar Locke suddenly intervened, shooting at the officers and offering them a car to escape. As they escaped in the car, Peacemaker became enraged, and Vigilante threw Smith's cell phone onto the road, thinking they could be tracked, destroying it.[10]

Ambushed by the Aryan Empire[]

Discovering that the butterfly-possessed Evergreen Police Department was publicly framing Smith based on a fake diary, Chase and Smith decided to escape and take on the Cow's death themselves, accompanied by Eagly and John Economos, with whom they rocked out to a Wig Wam song. However, they were caught off guard when the White Dragon attacked the mobile unit, and Vigilante nearly sacrificed himself to save his friends, but managed to survive, being knocked unconscious inside a car.

While in the woods, Chase stopped to urinate, which he found difficult since he couldn't undress.[11] Auggie eventually intercepted them and confronted his son. Considering that August had holes in his armor, Chase jumped on his back and stabbed him by using one of the gasps in his armor when he was about to kill Peacemaker, managing to hurt him.[1] White Dragon threw Vigilante off of him and the Aryans surrounded him, John Economos shot all the Aryans with a machine gun, and allowing Peacemaker to finally kill his father, causing him to cry. Vigilante, not understanding his facial expressions at first, comforted him by telling him “tender niche touching”.[11]

Peacemaker and his teammates desperately rushed to a veterinary clinic, where the veterinarians kindly offered to tend to Eagly's injuries; however, Vigilante held the veterinarians at gunpoint, worried about protecting he and peacemaker as they were both wanted by police. Leota Adebayo and Emilia Harcourt then arrived at the veterinary clinic to organize the team, placing Harcourt as the new leader after Murn was assassinated, and motivating the team to defeat the Cow. Ready to stop the threat, the 11th Street Kids headed to a veterinary van to travel to Coverdale Ranch.[11] While traveling in the mobile unit, Vigilante and Peacemaker farted in front of Leota Adebayo to annoy her, with Chase also making hand gestures as if pretending to swallow his farts.

Upon arriving at the barn, the team devised a plan to have John Economos leave the Sonic Boom helmet inside. After Adebayo managed to activate the helmet using a walkie-talkie connected to the helmet, collapsing the barn, and Economos escaped, Emilia Harcourt, Peacemaker, and Vigilante rushed to the ranch with weapons and caught the Butterflies off guard, killing several of them, but but was shot in the back leading him to fall unconscious. After Smith and Leota Adebayo killed the Cow, a wounded Chase regained consciousness and rejoined his friends to leave the barn,[12] where they briefly met the Justice Gang, who had arrived late the scene, and Smith mocked them.

The team took Chase, Harcourt and Economos to the Mount Rouge Health Center. Hospitalized, Chase began his recovery successfully by being healed of all his injuries. Chase was on his stretcher watching the news, and saw Leota Adebayo exposing her mother and revealing the truth about the Peacemaker's Diary and Task Force X, as well as naming Chase and Smith as heroes, clearing them of the charges, making Chase happy before escaping from the hospital to celebrate.[1]

One night in June 2025, Chase called Economos while taking a break at work and asked him to quiz him on owl trivia. After failing to get a question right, Chase asked if Economos had been in contact with Peacemaker before he was confronted by Dave. Chase complained that Dave had become difficult to work with since moving up to a manager position at Fennel Fields. Chase ended his phone call with Economos before arguing with Dave and going back to clean up his station.[1]

Chase was called the next day by Chris Smith to help him clean his house, and he arrived with the cleaning supplies and greeted Smith and Leota Adebayo who were having a conversation. When Adebayo said goodbye, Chase and Smith entered the house, but Chase quickly realized that Smith had been having a sex party when he saw people sleeping in the living room while nude, which disappointed him. As he continued walking, Chase overheard Smith ask a nude woman to ask everyone to leave, prompting Chase to say he realized she didn't wash her hands. Smith, however, asked Chase why he was so angry, to which Chase asked why he called him out, and Smith said he “fucked it up.”

Chase told Smith his frustration at having a sex party and not being invited, seeing it as outrageous, but Smith confessed to being depressed and trying to drown his sorrows, and missing Chase because he didn't like sex. Chase then said he didn't like sex for sex's sake, but like many other people, he saw it as an opportunity to bond with his best friend. As they headed to the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, Smith asked him to lock the door and was going to enter the code, but gave up after learning that A.R.G.U.S. was watching him, but finally gave in. Chase was told by Smith that he needed Chase's help to gut the body of an alternate Peacemaker he killed and incinerate it, then clean up the QUC, which Chase thought was pretty cool, although Smith denied it.

Chase said he'd love to meet an alternate him, and they arrived at the body, worried that the alternate family members would find out. Smith took out the bag that was covering it, and Chase loved the helmet. Consequently, the duo dragged the body and took out their saws to cut it up. While Smith was disgusted by cutting his doppelgänger up, Chase had no qualms and instead enjoyed it. Once cut up, Smith wrapped them in a bag to incinerate them while Chase cleaned the floor doing ballroom dance moves. Chase approached his friend to watch as they cremated the body, but they were interrupted by the Kyphotic Alien to whom Smith yelled to leave, and Chase excitedly asked who he was, to which Smith very angry with the alien described him as a rude who never said hello back.[13]

Chase, along with the other members of the 11th Street Kids, organized a reunion gathering to hang out on the rooftop of Emilia Harcourt's apartment. Chase brought a case of beer and climbed the fire ladder, greeting Harcourt and John Economos, and told Harcourt how he got there. However, when she told him not to use the fire ladder, Chase burst out laughing. Harcourt asked Chase for a beer, and Chase threw one to her. When he threw one to Economos, he dropped it on the floor, Chase threw another one at Chase, which also broke. Harcourt told him to just hand it to him, which he did before seeing Leota Adebayo and Chris Smith arrive and start the party.

Chase put on one of Harcourt's robes and went to the bathroom where John Economos was sleeping to carefully remove his pants without waking him up, stopping to kiss him on the forehead and then washed the pants, leaving them on the kitchen table. Chase fell asleep in a chair in the living room and was woken up by Harcourt using a blender and Leota Adebayo's grumbling, overhearing them talking about a breakup between Harcourt and Smith, which Chase denied, stating that as best friends they told each other all their secrets, even the darkest ones.

Adebayo asked him how many people he killed, to which he laughed because he didn't even keep track, but soon realized she was changing the subject. Chase approached the girls and asked them to ask him questions about spiders since he considered himself an expert, revealing also to know about crows, telling them that they are the only bird that uses tools, being able to grab a paper clip, unfold it and use it if another crow bothered them, stabbing it to kill it.

Economos looked up riddles on his phone and asked him how many eyes a tarantula had, and he confidently said two, but in reality it was 8, but while they were talking, they were interrupted when Economos was called by A.R.G.U.S. and he had to leave. Chase arrived to find Smith and Adebayo talking, excited to see the QUC, telling Adebayo that he had already entered as a benefit of being Smith's best friend and hoping there was another him in the other dimension. When she hung up, Adebayo was happy for her first client but asked Chase what Greek meant in security, which he did not know but he said that in prostitution it meant anal sex and that the conversation seemed to be about prostitution, disappointing Adebayo. Chase, however, relieved Adebayo by saying he did not kill prostitutes but their clients, with Adebayo claiming not to be a prostitute.

On the way to the cabin, Smith revealed that Harcourt betrayed him, with Chase saying she was too small to do so, but Smith believed she turned him in to return to A.R.G.U.S.. To break the ice, Chase asked them to ask him for facts about the manta rays, but when they didn't ask him any questions, Chase started spilling the beans himself and asked if they could go to Taco Bell. Smith asked how many manta rays it would take to shut him up, and Chase started counting.

An irritated Adebayo said she wanted someone to shoot her in the back, which Chase took literally and thought she was referring to her client. They eventually left Smith alone in the cabin, wanting privacy. That night, Smith left a text message for Leota Adebayo, to which Chase asked what she said, discovering that he had texted her to "take care of herself." Worried, they drove to the cabin to see what had happened, arriving just before the gate closed behind him. Worried, they went in to check and saw a message that Judomaster left saying he had followed him, but when moving the dimensional capsule, they discovered a farewell letter that Smith had left, so Adebayo entrusted Chase to call Harcourt and Economos.[16]

Vigilante insisted on going to see his alternate self, denying that he had ever grieved for Smith's abandonment, while Adebayo confronted Chase for caring more about meeting his alternate self than saving Smith, but Chase suggested staying. When his alternate self asked what the Nazis were like on his Earth, he told him that he didn't know much about history but that he did know that the United States won, which his alternate self thought was a utopia since on Earth-2, all resources are based on a dominant race forcing the others to work in the fields, with Chase comparing it to how he feels with people graffitiing on other people's walls. Chase then remembered Leota Adebayo who was in danger in the Nazi dimension, so they despaired to save her.

Disappointed over his friend's refusal to see them, he locked himself in his basement to play video games. He later received the visit of Leota Adebayo, who advised him to adopt a better attitude with his mother he keeps being disrespectful to. Noticing how depressed he looked, Adebayo attempted to convince him to use the money he had confiscated during his crusade as a vigilante to bail Chris out of jail. Adrian refused at first, believing drug money to be cursed, but ended up listening to his friend after she told him to take something bad and make something good out of it.

Inside Chris' motel room, the group had a heartfelt conversation where they convince him to stop running away from his past. Calling him his best friend, Adrian told him he didn't want to shoot "stuff" without him. Reunited, the group headed back to town afterwards.[3]

Inspired by their mutual effort to "make the world a better place" and to stop receiving orders from A.R.G.U.S., the 11th Street Kids created their own covert operation agency, Checkmate. Thanks to the large amount of drug money, Adrian has been keeping in his basement, the team had enough funds to make their project possible. Locating their headquarters in Evergreen, they were joined by former A.R.G.U.S. agents, Sasha Bordeaux, Judomaster, and Langston Fleury. Adrian formed a friendship with the latter, sharing animal facts which Fleury kept contradicting from his desk.[3]

Personality[]

"Dude, you're my best friend. I... I don't wanna do cool shit without you."
―Adrian Chase to Chris Smith[src]

Adrian Chase is enthusiastic and sadistic. He shows great interest in vigilantism and helping others, in which he enjoys killing criminals without remorse. Chase ultimately wants to do whatever he can to help his best friend Christopher Smith, due to the admiration that he has for him. However, Chase also seems to be completely oblivious to any kind of social cues, frequently misinterpreting other's reactions, misunderstanding metaphorical statements and making awkward comments unaware of their context, showing a lack of social skills and social awareness, as well as behaving inappropriately when engaging in public. These elements could suggest that Chase is autistic despite being able to fully communicate.

Chase also displays narcissistic behavior, becoming excited to meet his alternate self, sharing all of his traits and interests, such as Infernape being his favorite Pokémon. Chase also behaves very aggressively towards his mother, not being able to stand her butting into his business, explicitly forbidding her from entering his room in the basement, even calling her a "bitch". When Chase brought his friends to his house to plant the interdimensional device in the basement, Chase lashed out at his mother, insulting her and demanding that she leave, behaviors that outraged Adebayo, who demanded that he treat her well. Chase initially refused to use the drug money, considering it dirty money that he could not hand over to the police because they were corrupt, but was convinced by Adebayo that it could be put to ethical use, paying Smith's bail and founding Checkmate to make the world a better place.
